On Thursday’s episode of The Young and the Restless, Phyllis Summers walked into the Newman Ranch acting like she finally had the upper hand. After weeks of scrambling, spiraling, and watching her legal situation get worse by the day, she suddenly believes she has exactly what Victor Newman wants most: Matt Clark.
And for a brief moment, it almost looked like Phyllis thought she had won.
But if there’s one thing longtime Y&R viewers know, it’s this: Victor Newman never loses control of a situation for very long. And there’s almost no chance he’s going to let Phyllis dictate the terms here.
Phyllis Thinks She Finally Has Leverage
Phyllis spent most of the episode acting unusually confident for someone who is still staring down possible prison time. After firing Michael Baldwin and deciding she could negotiate better on her own, she revealed her latest strategy — offering Matt Clark to Victor in exchange for getting Christine off her back.
The problem is that Phyllis clearly believes she’s negotiating from a position of power.

She strutted into the Newman Ranch practically bragging that she had Matt “on ice” and acted like Victor would have no choice but to fold. For a second, even Michael looked intrigued by the possibility that her plan might actually work.
But then Victor reminded everyone exactly who he is.
Instead of agreeing to her terms outright, Victor immediately added his own condition: he wants Matt Clark and Newman Enterprises returned. In other words, Victor is not interested in helping Phyllis unless he gets absolutely everything he wants in return.
That’s where this whole thing starts to feel doomed for Phyllis.
Victor Never Makes Deals Without an Exit Strategy

One of the biggest mistakes characters make on The Young and the Restless is assuming Victor will honor the spirit of a deal once he gets what he needs. He may technically keep his word in some form, but Victor always protects himself first.
That’s why it’s hard to imagine Phyllis truly handing Matt over without trying to outmaneuver Victor somehow.
She already knows Victor is furious. She knows Nick is unstable and desperate to get his hands on Matt personally. She also knows the Newman family views Matt as a direct threat. Once Victor has Matt, Phyllis loses the only leverage protecting her.
And honestly? Phyllis knows that too.
That’s what made her scenes with Michael so interesting. Even while pretending she had everything under control, there was still an underlying panic beneath the confidence. She is cornered right now, and this “deal” feels more like survival mode than some master plan.
Matt Is Becoming More Dangerous By the Minute

Another problem Phyllis may not fully understand is that Matt himself is becoming increasingly unpredictable.
At the GCAC, Phyllis continued trying to protect him and even warned him to stay hidden from the Newmans. She insisted Victor, Nick, and Noah were dangerous people and encouraged Matt to trust her instead. But cracks are already starting to show.
Matt is beginning to remember flashes of violence, including Nick brutally beating him. He also keeps hearing from different people that he may have done terrible things before losing his memory. The confusion is clearly building.
That makes this entire situation incredibly risky for Phyllis.
She may think she’s hiding a bargaining chip, but Matt is starting to feel more like a ticking time bomb. The longer she keeps him close, the more likely this explodes in her face.
Nick Is Completely Losing Control

Part of what makes Victor so desperate to resolve this situation quickly is Nick’s downward spiral.
Thursday’s Y&R episode made it painfully clear that Nick is not thinking rationally anymore. His emotional breakdown with Victor was one of the rawest scenes he’s had in a long time. He openly admitted he feels like he’s failing everyone around him and still insisted that killing Matt is the only way to end this nightmare.
Victor looked genuinely shaken by it.
He knows Nick is vulnerable right now, especially with concerns about drugs continuing to hang over him. That’s why Victor is trying to take control before Nick does something irreversible.
And if Victor believes Phyllis is standing in the way of that? He absolutely will cross her to get Matt.
Phyllis Is Probably Underestimating Everyone Involved

The bigger issue here is that Phyllis seems to think she’s the smartest person in every room again.
She thinks she can manipulate Victor. She thinks she can outplay Christine. She thinks she can control Matt. And she thinks she can keep Michael close enough to help while still pretending she doesn’t need him.
That usually ends badly for her.
Even now, you can already see the cracks forming. Nick doesn’t trust her. Victor clearly isn’t giving her exactly what she wants. Michael looks worried she’s making things worse. And Matt himself is starting to piece together fragments of who he really is.
For someone who keeps insisting she’s finally in control, Phyllis is standing in the middle of a very dangerous situation with almost no real backup.
And in true Phyllis fashion, that’s usually when everything starts collapsing.
