We all saw Neil Young bite the dust recently by trying to censor podcast host Joe Rogan on Spotify. The rocker gave the streaming platform an ultimatum, choose him or Rogan. I think we all saw it coming, but they indeed chose their cash cow Rogan and their $100 million dollar investment.
Cancel culture is the term we’ve coined for this type of behavior, attempting to censor or block someone because you may not personally agree with something they said. However, it seems to continue backfiring. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this. Rogan’s friend Dave Chappelle was also the target of a similar attack, though it ended up boosting his viewers.
Is Attempting To Cancel Joe Rogan Just Emboldening His Brand And Drawing More Viewers?
As these things continue to happen, we see the trend. The person being attacked ends up being emboldened and their brand, views and listeners drive up. So, the big question is, why do people continue to try to cancel them and when will they stop? Unfortunately, I’m not sure it’s going to stop anytime soon, but it is interesting that they continue to shoot themselves in the foot, and repeatedly come back for me.
It reminds me of the video game Far Cry 3, and the definition of insanity, “Did I ever tell you what the definition of insanity is? Insanity is doing the exact… same f–king thing… over and over again expecting… shit to change… That.”
It seems to fit perfectly for what we’re seeing, and while I don’t want to attack anyone personally, their continued assaults do seem completely insane. Especially in a country that was founded on free speech and the ability for someone to say what they want, sans calls to violence.
With the recent Neil Young and Joe Rogan situation, are people finally having enough of this charade and could we see a change soon where people choose to shut up and mind their own business or will we continue attacking people we don’t agree with?
What do you think? Is this cancel culture going to continue for much longer or does it seem like it’s on his last leg? Let us know in the comments below.
