‘General Hospital’ Spoilers has told many socially relevant tales throughout the years. In 1994, A drunk driver hit Bobbie Spencer’s (Jackie Zeman) daughter, BJ (Brighton Hertford). B.J. was in a school bus accident, rendering her brain-dead. Bobbie’s husband, Tony Jones (Brad Maule), decided to take BJ off life support. Tony then gave her heart to BJ’s cousin, Maxie Jones (then played by Robyn Richards).
The writers told the storyline in a socially responsible manner with real emotion and heart. Also, in 1994, doctors diagnosed Stone Cates (Michael Sutton) with AIDS.
He was Robin Scorpio’s boyfriend (Kimberly McCullough) and Sonny Corinthos’s (Maurice Benard) best friend. Once again, the story was powerful and was told meaningfully. It educated viewers and expressed the truth.
We, the viewers, saw performances and writing of the highest caliber. The show made responsible choices about how they told the story, which was very real.
It may have been one of General Hospital’s best times. Claire Lebine was the head writer, and she ensured the writing was worthy of the cause they were portraying.
General Hospital Spoilers: Sasha’s Story is Irresponsible
Fast forward to 2023, where we are watching Sasha Gilmore (Sofia Mattsson) suffering in a mental health facility. An evil psychiatrist unjustly brought Sasha to Ferncliff and purposefully sabotaged her mental health to make a fast buck.
Granted, Sofia is knocking it out of the park with her amazing performance. However, this storyline may leave a bad taste in the viewer’s mouth.
Maurice Benard is very vocal about how he feels about mental health and how important it is to seek help when necessary.
To think that any psychiatrist with a degree in psychology would go out of their way to endanger their patient is repulsive.
The show is simply going too far with the Sasha storyline. We are still watching her being tortured and unnecessarily injected with God knows what as she screams for her psychiatrist to stop drugging her.
It is a terrible thing to watch. General Hospital may have missed a chance to tell a socially relevant story about Sasha in which she overcomes her struggles in a responsible and empowering way.
Even if Sasha’s storyline had to go this route, they didn’t need to put poor Sasha in a mental institution.
Now, we watch Cody Bell (Josh Kelly) sneak in to see Sasha in a psych hospital where he shouldn’t be allowed to enter Sasha’s room.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Operation Get Her Out of There
The only consolation is if he can get her out of there since she doesn’t belong in a psychiatric facility to begin with.
But that is a whole other issue. Not to mention, Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Burroughs) needs to be held accountable for doing this to Sasha.
Watching her take advantage of someone in a weakened mental state has been difficult, and she is supposed to be family.
General Hospital was, back in the day, the one soap opera you could count on to tell a realistic, socially relevant story. It did it with great dignity and class.
Hopefully, there are writers who remember this and try to fix what they can and fast.
