Hulu Removes Golden Girls Episode With Blackface Joke

If there were four of the least problematic women to come out of the 1980s, it was definitely the Golden Girls. However, the long running sitcom, that was about four older women who shared their friendship and home in Miami, Florida, is making headlines after Hulu decided to pull an episode in which two of the characters appear as though they have on black face. Yet, it is actually mud face masks that they have on. The move has now sparked controversy as some believe that the online streaming giant might have reacted to sensitively over what some people aren’t calling a racial issue at all. Here’s what you need to know.

The episode that everyone is talking about originally aired on NBC in 1988 and is titled “Mixed Blessings.” It revolves around Dorothy (Beatrice Arthur) being concerned that her son is marrying a considerably older woman, Lorraine, played by Rosalind Cash. Meanwhile, Lorraine’s mother, played by Virginia Capers, is upset because Dorothy’s son is white and her daughter is Black.

However, it didn’t take very long for Twitter users to express their dismay over the decision, with a lot of people calling it an “overcorrection.” Some comments have included, “Removing this episode is weird, counterproductive and stupid. It diminishes the effort to actually end racism. It’s just so dumb,” along with, “First of all, they were in mud masks not blackface. And second of all, in what world does ‘Stop killing us’ sound like ‘Please remove episodes of Golden Girls’? I didn’t see that ask on anyone’s protest sign.”

Another comment reads, “Black people didn’t ask you to take down that Golden Girls episode. Mud facials and black people aren’t synonymous. And by taking the episode down, you rob of us incredible black talent like Rosalind Cash & Virginia Capers.”

So far reps from Hulu have not responded to the backlash. In the meantime, drop us a line with your thoughts in our comments section below. Are you a fan of the British royal family?
