Hulu ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ spoilers finds that now that we have gotten a little. It od the meat and bones of the story of the show, we are ready for more and boy do they deliver. This episode focuses on Mia Warren, previously, Mia Wright (Tiffany Boone) and we get to see her with her very conservative Jamaican family. They are sitting down to dinner and saying a prayer for God to guide Mia when she goes off to college, they also pray that Warren gets drafted by the NFL so that one of their children can have a prosperous career. Wow, way to believe in your kid, Mom and Dad! Across from her sits brother Warren who is the inspiration for her future surname. Later when she talks to her brother he jokes with her about how her parents are afraid of her going to New York because they think she will either become a hooker or a lesbian. He then tries to offer the money he was saving for a car for her to pay her tuition in New York but she refuses. Mia wants to find her own way.
And find her own way she does. In New York she gets involved with famed artist Pauline Hawthorne, the same Pauline Hawthorne that took the picture of her in the bathtub. It is then that on the train she sees a man in a trenchcoat who keeps following her and one day he actually makes the first move and approaches her. It’s not a pickup line, actually approaches her about being a surrogate for him and his wife and since this is a paying position and Mia doesn’t know how she is going to pay for her school now that her scholarship was cut. The Ryans (that is the couple’s last name) pay her for an at-home insemination using a turkey baster?! Oh man, you hear stories but you never actually think that they could be true, however, ladies and gentlemen of the jury, THERE IT IS! Obviously, this process was no walk in the park because at this point, in the story, Mia’s never even used a tampon so I imagine the idea of a turkey baster would be a little bit intimidating.
Hulu ‘Little Fires Everywhere’ Spoilers: Flying the Coop – Well, almost!
Of course when brother Warren finds all this out he’s rather shocked and proceeds to give her a hard time about it saying that their parents worst nightmares have all come true and that Mia went to New York to start having sex (in theory) and become a lesbian because by that time she is already living with Pauline and they are in a relationship, which becomes pretty obvious after Warren leaves and they consummate things. It is then that Pauline takes the infamous bathtub photo entitled “Duo”. Afterwards Mia gets the news that her brother has died and that she needs to come home to get to his funeral even though the point of that ends up being rather moot because she is pregnant and her parents don’t let her attend for fear that they will be questioned by their obviously bible thumping circle of friends over where that baby came from.

At this point some time passes and we get to see Mia on the phone with Pauline and Pauline is asking when she is going to come home but she tells her that she is going to stay for a. Little while longer. I honestly do not know why Mia stayed because if her parents were that strict and abusive with her then why on earth would you stay in that environment while pregnant? It mystifies me. The next phone call we see is Mia talking yo Anita, Pauline’s gallerist, who informs her that Pauline has passed away from Ovarian Cancer and she was just diagnosed 2 months ago, about the time when they had their last phonecall. She said it was too debilitating to treat which usually means stage 4. Pauline left her the photograph and Anita was the one who was left in charge of her estate it looks like.
Meanwhile early 80’s Elena has her own set of problems to deal with because she is trying to go back to work while she has 3 kids and is now pregnant with a fourth. Professionally her life has suffered because her boss is rather mysognistic and razzes her for taking a full 6 weeks of maternity leave with each child, meanwhile he has promoted all of her office mates to positions which she had previously wanted that eould have paid better. Geeze. Elena really foes not want to be pregnant and trots out the idea of abortion to her Mother who tells her that people with money and resources don’t get them. Of course then Elena asks her if not wanting another child is a good enougb reason and I guess we have our answer because a few months later Baby Izzy is born.
Bill is excited about having another baby though and is totally on board with the idea but they soon find out that “4 is very different than 3.” and while Elena has a plate-breaking meltdown and goes out to buy a pacifier for Izzy, when a song comes over the store loudspeaker and she is suddenly back in the disco in Paris, it’s then that she phones her ex Jamie and has him come to her in the middle of the night and then they run off to a seedy motel for a romp. All this is interrupted by the fact that now she is a lactating Mom and needs to release. Instead of taking responsibility and apologizing to Jamie though she decides the best course of action is to put the blame all on him and tell him that he had no right to take advantage of her like that and fly the coop, as it were. She comes home just in time to rock a screaming baby Izzy to sleep and for hubby Bill to find Jamie’s number on a piece of paper.
