Prince Archie turns six today, May 6th, as we recall how Prince Harry and Meghan Markle broke royal tradition by keeping the birth of their son a private affair.
Meghan Shared A Birthday Tribute For Archie on Instagram
The Duchess of Sussex shared a birthday tribute on Instagram and revealed that she and Harry hosted a party for Archie last weekend.
A photo, taken at dusk, accompanied the post. It showed Archie watching the sunset over the ocean from the Sussexes’ home in Montecito, California.
Her message read,
“Our son. Our sun. Happy 6th birthday to Archie! Thank you for all of the love, prayers, and warm wishes for our sweet boy! He’s six! Where did all the time go?”
She continued with a special message,
“And for all of you who came to celebrate with us at his party last weekend, thank you for making his birthday so incredibly special.”
The tradition of new royal mothers appearing with their babies outside of St. Mary’s Hospital on the steps of the Lido wing was established by Princess Anne after the birth of her first son, Peter Phillips.
Princess Diana later upheld the tradition with her two children, Prince Harry and Prince William, and again later on with Kate Middleton and all three of her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
However, when Meghan Markle became pregnant with her first child, Archie, in 2019, she and Prince Harry elected to keep their birth plans private as Buckingham Palace made it clear that they would share the news
“after they’d have time to celebrate as a new family.”
Meghan Originally Wanted A Home Birth
Meghan was said to want a home birth. However, Mother Nature had other plans. Meghan was more than a week overdue and was forced to deliver her baby in the hospital.
The couple entered the hospital via an underground tunnel, and their plans were so secret that they could enter and exit the hospital without anyone else knowing.
Archie was born at Portland Hospital, which is an American-owned private medical center in London. No member of the royal family knew this at the time.
Harry and Meghan spent four hours with their son before the Duke of Sussex shared the good news.
Several hours later, the palace released a statement that Meghan was in labor, despite having already given birth eight hours earlier.
Archie was presented to the world two days after Meghan gave birth to him. It was a carefully orchestrated photo call at Windsor Castle.
The couple revealed their baby’s name: Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor, which was accompanied by a heartwarming picture of Harry’s grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, meeting her new great-grandson.
During an episode of Meghan’s podcast, Confessions of A Female Founder. Meghan told the story of Archie’s birth and his subsequent introduction into the world.
In June 2021, Archie became a big brother to the Sussex’s second child, Princess Lilibet. Her full name is Lilibet Diana Mountbatten Windsor. The Queen wasn’t too thrilled that Harry and Meghan named their daughter after her childhood nickname, Lilibet.
Harry and Meghan have chosen to raise their children out of the spotlight. They are claiming to want to shield them from the press.
