‘Greys Anatomy’ fans the world over sighed in relief this week when, against all odds, their favorite medical drama was renewed for a 19th season.

It was an early announcement on ABC’s behalf that Meredith Grey (Pompeo) will be scrubbing in for at least one more season, despite the fact that the actress and series producer has been very vocal about ending this loooooong chapter in her life.

Only last month Pompeo was quoted as saying, “I’ve been trying to focus on convincing everybody that [Grey’s] should end.”  However, it seems like she couldn’t even convince herself!

In 2022-2023 Pompeo will be joined by the two other original stars, Chandra Wilson (Dr. Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Dr. Richard Webber) who both signed multi-year deals back in 2021 when Grey’s was picked up for its current, 18th season.

No word has come in yet on who else from the Grey Sloan Memorial medical team will also make it back for the 19th and perhaps final season, but if we know Grey’s, it won’t be everyone we are currently seeing on our screens.

“I couldn’t be more excited that we get to keep telling the stories of Meredith, Bailey, Richard and all of the other doctors at Grey Sloan Memorial for another season,” show creator, Shonda Rhimes said in a statement when the renewal was announced. “This is a true testament to [show runner] Krista Vernoff, the cast, the crew and all the writers who keep the audience on the edge of their seat week after week. And it would not be possible without the generations of incredible fans who have supported Grey’s Anatomy for so many years.”

Though it is not 100% sure what or who got Pompeo to sign on for at least one more year, it is noted the star has received another salary increase and remains the highest-earning actress in a primetime drama series on broadcast television.

While fellow star and sometime director Debbie Allen (Dr. Catherine Avery) has claimed she would be able to talk Pompeo into staying on as the titular character for another year, it is likely the promotion to executive producer from co-executive producer that had Pompeo eventually signing back on.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ sister show, Station 19 (on which Pompeo also has a producer credit) has also been picked up for a 6th season.
