‘Grey’s Anatomy’ creator Shonda Rhimes has been pondering the end of the long-running ABC hospital drama for many years, but each time she thinks they’re out, the People’s Choice, GLAAD Media, NAACP Image, Teen Choice, Writers Guild of America, Golden Globe, Primetime Emmy (and others) award-winning show just keeps on keeping on- much to fan delight.
Rumors are rampant that the titular Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) will be packing away her stethoscope at the end of this current season 18, but how will it all end? Err…the woman who created the series doesn’t really know.
‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Creator Shonda Rhimes Has Written 8 Series Finales — But They’ve Already All Aired
Speaking with Variety, 51-year-old Rhimes admitted, “I’ve written the end of that series, I want to say, a good eight times. I was like, ‘And that will be the end!’ or, ‘That’ll be the final thing that’s ever said or done!’ And all of those things have already happened. So I give up on that, you know what I mean?”
Executive producer, Krista Vernoff has taken the reins from Rhimes who is currently working on the Netflix smash, Bridgerton. Vernoff has been acting as showrunner on Grey’s Anatomy for several years and Shonda isn’t even sure if she will be a part of the series finale.
“Am I going to be the person who decides like what the final scene is? I don’t know!” Rhimes revealed.
However, she is the one who will determine if that finale scene will air at the end of this season…or in 18 more seasons from now.
“Am I the person who decides when the show is over? Yes. And I take full responsibility for that when or if everybody gets mad at me,” she said.
Although, in reality, she won’t be making the decision alone. Star, Pompeo has said that it will be a joint decision between her and Rhimes, when the time comes.
“I’ve been trying to get away for years,” Pompeo, also 51, revealed to Entertainment Tonight but further explained, “I have strong relationships at the network and they have been very, very good to me, and have incentivized me to stay.”
Fans are certainly keeping their fingers crossed those incentives keep enticing Pompeo back into the operating room for years to come.
Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
