‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers confirm that Leslie Charleson, who played the iconic role of Monica Quartermaine, has died at age 79 after a long illness.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Executive Producer Frank Valentini Took To X To Announce The Sad News
Soap Opera Digest reported the sad news on Sunday, January 12th, after GH executive producer Frank Valentini announced her death. In a statement, he wrote on X,
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of my dear friend and colleague, Leslie Charleson.”
“Her enduring legacy has spanned nearly 50 years on General Hospital alone, and just as Monica was the heart of the family, Leslie was the beloved matriarch of our cast and crew,”
He shared.
“I will miss our daily chats, her quick wit, and incredible presence on set.”
His post concluded,
“On behalf of everyone at General Hospital, my heartfelt sympathy goes out to her loved ones during this difficult time.”
Charleson began playing Monica in 1977, which makes her the longest-running cast member on the soap.
Leslie Charleson was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1945. Charleson always wanted to be an actress, as she acted as a child and in high school and later studied theater at Bennett College in New York.
Charleson’s first significant acting gig came when she was cast on the soap, “A Flame in the Wind,” where she played the role of Pam.
In 1966, she joined the soap As The World Turns, where she played Alice Whipple. Later, she moved to another soap, Love is a Many Splendored Thing, where she played Iris Donnelly Garrison.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Charleson Was Hired By Then Executive Producer Tom Donovan
Once her run at Love is a Many Splendored Thing was over, she moved to Los Angeles and had no intention of ever working on a soap again. Fate obviously had other plans.
Tom Donovan, who was her producer on Love is a Many Splendored Thing, took over as executive producer of General Hospital and invited her to join the cast as Monica in 1976.
GH had just decided to let go of the actress who was playing Monica, Patsy Rahn.
At first, Charleson had it rough because the girl who had previously played Monica was “rudely fired,” so the rest of the cast immediately resented Charleson for taking her place.
Donovan was also fired shortly after, and the legendary Gloria Monty of Luke and Laura fame became executive producer.
That being said, Charleson got along exceptionally well with Monty, whom she already knew from another acting job she held.
When Monty took the reigns at GH, she expanded the prominent Quartermaine family, which Monica married into. The legendary Jane Elliot, whom Charleson knew from working on other soaps with her, assumed the role of spitfire Tracy Quartermaine.
Anna Lee played Lila Quartermaine, and David Lewis played Edward Quartermaine.
“Just to have that family established was the best thing in the world,”
Charleson beamed.
“They made them volatile and unique and rich and funny and wonderful, and you can’t ask for anything more than that!”
She exclaimed in a 2016 interview with Soap Opera Digest.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Charleson Was Highly Praised For Her Brest Cancer Storyline
Monica’s main love interest on the soap was Alan Quartermaine, played by the late Stuart Damon. In the late 70s and early 80s, the popular triangle involving Monica, Alan, and Rick Webber (Chris Robinson) was one of the major storylines on the show.
In the mid-1990s, Charleson portrayed one of its most important social issue stories ever. Monica was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Then executive producer Wendy Riche and the then head writer, the talented Claire Labine, spearheaded the story. Charleson, Riche, and Labine wanted to keep it honest and real. Charlson’s work in that storyline was rich and powerful.
The veteran actress said of the breast cancer story at the time,
“Monica’s battle with breast cancer was just so incredibly fulfilling.”
She added,
“Dealing with a real-life issue that afflicts many women and their families and being able to show the struggle and issues they face was something I am so proud of,”
She asserted.
“It was exhausting and incredibly difficult work, but the response to the storyline was truly humbling.”
Charleson was highly revered and praised for her acting as she portrayed a woman with breast cancer who was insecure due to having a mastectomy.
Monica tried to push her husband away. It was raw and meaningful, earning her a Daytime Emmy candidate for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Health issues forced Charleson to make less frequent appearances on GH in recent years. In 2010, she went to recurring status. Charleson was last seen on GH in December 2023.
