‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers confirm that Gregory Chase’s (Gregory Harrison) death and send-off was a beautiful and touching tribute to the character.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Gregory’s Various Relationships Were Always Wonderful To Watch
We didn’t know until Gregory passed in the May 20th episode of GH how much we had grown to love him. He was one of the brightest spots on the show.
We knew last year when the professor was diagnosed with ALS in April 2023 that his time in Port Charles wouldn’t be much longer.
His deep conversations, banter, and friendship with Tracy Quartermaine (Jane Elliot) were beyond fun to watch, and like Gregory and Tracy themselves, we wonder what could have been between them.
Gregory’s friendship with Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn) was also entertaining, as the two worked at the Invader and jumped out of an airplane together.
His relationship with sons Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton) and Harrison Chase (Josh Swickard) and granddaughter Violet Finn (Jophielle Love) was also worth every second of screen time.
So we couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of loss when Gregory died in his sleep due to heart failure. His presence brought a sense of warmth, kindness, and wisdom to a show that often depends on characters with a short fuse and a grudge to add excitement.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: “Goodnight Grandpa”
It was good to see Gregory make it through Brook Lynn Quartermaine (Amanda Setton) and Chase’s wedding. It made his officiating of the marriage that much more special.
When he went to sleep that night, he went over all the memories of his life before drifting off for the last time. Pictures of his younger days with his two sons mingled with his childhood when they were little boys. The montage couldn’t have been any lovelier.
Violet says, “Goodnight, Grandpa,” which is both sad and deeply touching, as the adorable little girl is the last thing on his mind. We knew, at that point, that Gregory was passing on.
The heartbreaking scene when Finn discovered his father’s lifeless body was very well written and acted. It served to propel a new storyline in which Finn falls back into an addiction to alcohol.
Recently, the June 5th episode of the show featured the memorial service, which was also a tear-jerker. They gathered at the park where Gregory used to sit and read to Violet to scatter his ashes. Finn read a section from Psalms, which was fitting.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Gregory’s Final Wishes
Alexis and Tracy’s speeches, and Violet’s poem knocked it out of the park, as well as the eulogies from his sons.
Tracy admitted that you could miss what you never had, hinting at her feelings for Gregory.
Alexis talked about how it was continuing to try, even though doomed to fail, and that was the triumph. This described Gregory’s battle with ALS perfectly.
Chase scatters the ashes around the tree and then hands the urn to Finn so he can spread the last of Gregory around. This is a moving and emotional scene.
Brook Lynn supporting her new husband through the ordeal was also heart-rending. Amanda Setton, who deserves more credit for her acting in this storyline, made her scenes incredibly poignant due to her subtle and effective skills. She told Chase that by spreading the ashes in the wind, water, and land, Gregory would be with Chase wherever he went.
We expected Finn to take a drink after the service, but it conveyed his pain.
Gregory’s death had a ripple effect on several characters on the canvas, and no doubt it will be felt for a long time to come.
