‘General Hospital’ (GH) Spoilers: Everyone knows that Mason Gatlin (Nathanyael Grey) is a bad guy, but we do not know enough about his character to determine WHY he is bad.

Mason almost killed Ava Jerome (Maura West) and Dex Heller (Evan Hofer), but fortunately, Dante Falconari (Dominic Zamprogna) showed up and shot him in the back.

Mason taking Ava to the cliff

Nathanyael has played a bad guy in every acting role he has undertaken. In Soap Opera Digest, Nathanyael said he has always played characters who are “bad to the bone” because he has “beady eyes and pointy features,” not to mention the shaved head.

General Hospital Spoilers: Nathanyael Likes Playing Bad Guys

Nathanyael likens playing a bad guy to being a video game character. He gets to live vicariously through them, do what he wants, has fun dialogue to play off of, and at the end of the day, he goes back to being Nathanyael.

Mason came to town with a mission: to get his cousin, Austin Gatlin (Roger Howarth), to do the bidding of a very dangerous and mysterious unknown boss.

Austin has tried to tell Mason he wants out and quits, but Mason has been very persistent. Mason even held a knife to Austin’s throat. The two are apparently involved with Cyrus Renault (Jeff Kober).

Mason followed Austin to Casa de Cassadine, and after Ava hit Nikolas Cassadine (Adam Huss) over the head with a statue, believing he killed him, he kidnapped Nikolas and went to Pawtuck.

Mason made sure that Nikolas was kept alive and that he could use it as an incentive to get Ava to cooperate with spying on Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) so his boss could get their hands on information about Pikeman.

Ava explained to Sonny about what was going on. She told him that Austin’s cousin, Mason Gatlin, was blackmailing her and Austin because he knew she killed Nikolas.

‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Why Mason REALLY Tried to Kill Ava

Sonny set up Mason and his boss with fake information, leading to Ava’s subsequent kidnapping. The interesting thing about Mason is that he knows he’s dirt.

He even admitted as much to Ava when they were in the car together before he tried to pull her over the cliff. Mason wasn’t so thrilled that Ava slept with Austin. He said he knew she liked him before he spoke, and when she heard his voice, she thought of him as “white trash.”

Ava trying to reason with Mason

Nathanyael thinks that his character Mason is the type to feel like, “Well, I’ve gone this far, may as well go all the way with it.”

It seemed like that’s how it was when he decided to try to kill Ava. Even though Cyrus told him to let her go, he would have killed Ava for personal reasons. She hurt his pride when she didn’t pick him over Austin, and Ava had to pay.

Nathanyael explains that he flips a switch like he is at the gym and goes for it. He slips right into character and gets the rush to go to the dark side.

So, it seems like Nathanyael has grown into his role. I wonder what is next for Austin’s lollipop-lickin’ cousin.
