‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers declare that the new head writing team has been confirmed at GH. The opening credits confirm that Elizabeth Korte and Chris Van Etten are writing the show.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Cathy LePard Is Now Associate Head Writer
Van Etten got his start at writing for the soaps on One Life to Live under the former head writer, Ron Carlivati, who recently left his writing position at Days of Our Lives. He was there until the show’s cancellation in 2012.
From there, he followed executive producer Frank Valentini and Carlivati to General Hospital and became part of its writing team.
Shelly Altman and Jean Passanante replaced Carlivati. Passanante retired from the show in 2017, and Van Etten was paired with Altman. Van Etten and Dan O’Conner took the reins as co-head writers when she left.
Both writers were let go of their positions in January, and Patrick Mulcahey took over as head writer with Elizabeth Korte. Korte has been a colleague of the GH writing staff for decades.
She started in the coveted Claire Lebine era in 1994 and switched positions several times. Korte was co-head writer in 2001 and was made script editor in 2008. She also co-created the GH spinoff, Night Shift, with Robert Guza.
Now, another change has been implemented on the GH writing staff. Former breakdown and scriptwriter Cathy LePard is now an associate head writer. There are already some oddities in the writing that some viewers may not have spotted, but they exist.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Some Characters Need More Consistent Writing
Many fans have been complaining about the decisions the powers-that-be have made about some of their favorite characters.
For example, Ava Jerome (Maura West) has become irredeemable, whereas she was more shaded in the grey area for a while. West is too good an actress to become the victim of a murder mystery, as everyone in Port Charles is gunning for her.
Ava’s character needs to be reevaluated, or maybe she can save a child’s life since that’s pretty much what it would take to redeem her. Even her friendship with Trina Robinson (Tabyana Ali) is hanging by a thread, and Nina Reeves (Cynthia Watros) jumped ship long ago.
The good news is that Sonny Corinthos‘s (Maurice Benard) medicine switch storyline appears to be wrapping up quickly. But could the writers please explain how the bottle of placebo pills ended up in Donna Corinthos‘s (Scarlett Spears) possession?
Another issue is Sam McCall‘s characterization. The writers have seemed intent on destroying that character and turning a bold private investigator into an insufferable, self-righteous complainer.
Sam once had a bit of an edge. And she was fun. Remember Sam and Jason Morgan‘s (Steve Burton) wedding at Noodle Buddha? The writers may want to look into it. Mining the show’s rich history would be ideal.
Executive producer Frank Valentini said,
“No one knows General Hospital and its history more than Elizabeth and Chris. Cathy joined the show in 2023, and her talent and love for the genre have been a tremendous asset. We look forward to this dynamic writing combination and continuing the legacy of the show and giving our fans much to look forward to.”
