‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers confirm that Eva LaRue, who played Natalia Ramirez on General Hospital, has officially exited GH in a dramatic, soapy style.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Natalia Confronted Sonny At His Granddaughter’s Christening
In the June 30th episode of the show, after confronting Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) at his granddaughter Daisy’s christening. Natalia took a dangerous mix of booze and pills in an act of desperation, due to Sonny’s decision to send her off to Belize for good.
By the end of the episode, she had passed out on the couch. Viewers were left to assume she committed suicide. At the very least, she overdosed.
La Rue started her soap career playing Maria Santos Grey on All My Children. She became one-half of the super couple Maria and Edmund Grey (played by John Callahan). She also married her co-star.
The actress, who first aired on GH in February 2024, spoke to Soap Opera Digest about the circumstances surrounding her character’s tragic fate.
“I was originally supposed to be on the show for a couple of months,”
She shared.
“And it ended up being a much longer run, which was great and really fun because there are so many All My Children actors there, and so it felt like home.”
LaRue states that she realized a couple of months ago that Natalia’s
“days in Port Charles were likely numbered.”
She claimed she first felt it in January. La Rue explained that the powers that be tried hard to rehabilitate the character, whose homophobic views didn’t exactly sit well with the fans.
Natalia was the mother of Alison Rogers (also known as Blaze, played by Jacqueline Grace Lopez). Blaze was involved in a romance with Sonny’s daughter, Kristina Corinthos-Davis (Kate Mansi).
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: La Rue Couldn’t Get The Audience To Warm Up To Natalia
LaRue confided in the outlet that when Sonny told Natalia, they couldn’t be friends anymore. After Natalia violated his trust, she sensed that it was only a matter of time before she was a goner.
The character was supposed to have a love story with Sonny. Still, the viewers weren’t having it. Certainly not after she hurt Kristina and alienated the LGBTQ + community by talking trash about gay people.
LaRue admitted it was “really tough” to reverse the narrative regarding Natalia. It was an uphill battle to try to ingratiate herself with the audience.
The GH fans were outraged by Natalia’s outdated belief system.
“It was hard for me, actually, as a person.”
She mused.
“Because in the daytime, when you play a character like Maria Santos, love her or hate her, she was not ever meant to be a vilified character,”
She reflected.
“And so, it was hard to go from being that character, being a fan-favorite, to being, like, literally hated. The GH fans couldn’t stand Natalia. So that was tough, especially if you are accustomed to being rooted for, to be rooted against, is not as comfortable.”
LaRue stated.
“I had a blast at General Hospital,”
LaRue gushed.
“I loved being there and had a lot of really great scenes, and I loved everybody that I got to work with. It was just an awesome experience, and I was really glad I got to stay longer than I was supposed to.”
