‘General Hospital’ spoilers reveal that the original Ethan Lovett will return to GH, with Nathan Dean reprising the role. Executive producer Frank Valentini has confirmed Dean’s upcoming return.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Ethan Lovett Is the Son of Luke Spencer
Longtime fans know that Ethan Lovett is the son of Luke Spencer (Tony Geary) and Holly Sutton (Emma Samms). Dean played Ethan from 2009 to 20012 and returned for brief stints in 2013, 2015, and 2020.
TV Insider broke the news of Nathan Dean’s GH comeback earlier today. Valentini told the outlet,
“We are so excited that he’s returning in April. We have a great story planned, with, of course, a few twists along the way.”
The last time we saw Dean play Ethan on the soap, he assisted his on-screen father, Tony Geary, in his retirement.
When the character Ethan Lovett was on the canvas in 2023, he was played by James Ryan, whose appearance wasn’t exactly mind-blowing. (No offense to the actor).
When GH last left off, Dean’s portrayal of Ethan was in Monte Carlo, with Olivia Falconeri (Lisa LoCicero) there. Olivia and Robert Scorpio (Tristian Rogers) were searching for information about Ethan’s presumed-dead mother, Holly. Ethan joined Robert and Olivia in the search.
However, Holly wasn’t found. It was later revealed in 2022 that Holly was indeed alive, and being held captive by Victor Cassadine (Charles Shaughnessy), and he also imprisoned her son, Ethan.
General Hospital Spoilers: Ethan Has Ties to Several Characters
Sadly, Ethan’s dad, Luke, has passed away, and his portrayer, the great Tony Geary, recently died in December 2025 after complications from surgery. The show recently had a beautiful tribute for the actor and Luke Spencer.
However, Holly is still around somewhere, and he has a half-sister, Sasha Corbin (Sofia Mattsson), and a baby niece, Daisy Gilmore (Levi Clark Coughlin). Plus, he also has a very adventurous half-brother, Lucky Spencer (Jonathan Jackson).
Ethan also has some other loved ones in Port Charles. It will also be interesting to see scenes between Ethan and his ex-girlfriend, Kristina Corinthos Davis (Kate Mansi), and between Luke’s “brother from another mother,” Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard), and Ethan. Sonny will be thrilled that Ethan has returned.
Interestingly, when Dean first auditioned for GH, he tried to get the role of Dante Falconeri (played by Dominic Zamprogna).
However, the casting director, Mark Teschner, was so impressed by Dean that the show decided to create the character of Ethan, specifically for Dean.
If memory serves, Ethan moved to Australia. It’s also been a while since Ethan was mentioned on the soap. It’s going to be fun to see Ethan back in Port Charles.
For now, his storyline is being kept hush-hush, but we know it’s going to be very entertaining with Ethan involved.
General Hospital Spoilers: Ethan Is the “Love Child” of Luke Spencer and Holly Sutton
The storyline of Ethan being revealed as the “love child” of Luke Spencer and Holly Sutton was very memorable. Dean still gives credit to Tony Geary for teaching him a lot about being a professional actor.
In 2021, Dean decided not to renew his contract with GH. So, Ethan was written off the show. He told Soaps In Depth that he wanted to pursue other opportunities.
Apparently, he was frustrated with the lack of a storyline for his character. His love interest, Irina Cassadine (Alyshia Ochse), had been killed off the show, which also upset him.
Dean reflected on his time as Ethan in 2019. He shared with Soap Opera Digest,
“I really learned about work ethic. First of all, I learned so much from working so closely with Tony Geary.
General Hospital Spoilers: The Actor Learned from the Best of the Best
He continued,
“The man is a legend — just being around him, absorbing his life experience, hearing his stories, and seeing the way he works….” I remember one time, I asked if [the director] would be mad if I did this or if I changed this or if I tried something different, and he said, ‘Listen to me, Nathan, the worst thing that’s going to happen is they say no,’ and that really opened my world because I was like, ‘You’re right.’
The actor added,
“We have the freedom here now to play. This is a creative environment, and this is a creative endeavor, and we have the freedom to really reach for something — and if it’s too much, then they say no, and we pull it back and find a middle ground.”
He spoke of his inspiration,
“But, he always said, ‘Don’t be afraid to leap into something,’ and that stuck with me forever. To this day, I’ll never forget that, and I’m so grateful to him and to the soap community and General Hospital and everyone there.”
