“General Hospital” is set to commemorate its 62nd year on air with a special episode that honors the legacy of one of its most beloved characters, Dr. Monica Quartermaine, portrayed by the late Leslie Charleson. The episode, airing on Tuesday, April 1st, will coincide with the fictional Port Charles hospital’s own 62nd anniversary.

In a poignant tribute, the hospital will unveil the “Dr. Monica Quartermaine Cardiac Wing,” celebrating Monica’s significant contributions and enduring presence within the “General Hospital” universe. This special episode will precede the show’s handling of Charleson’s passing, which occurred in January.

Executive Producer Frank Valentini shared insights into the episode’s creation, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging the show’s history while moving forward. “There’s more tribute to come for Monica,” Valentini revealed. “But the opportunity presented itself that we would have the anniversary of the hospital be on the anniversary of the show. So it’s a little meta, but I think it’s great. And then to give the hospital a reason to celebrate, that’s how we came up with the the new wing for Monica, which is a really beautiful set. It’s pretty incredible.”

Valentini described the new wing as having an “airy” atmosphere and highlighted the episode’s focus on weaving together the core relationships that drive the show’s narrative. He stressed the significance of honoring the show’s iconic actors and their contributions, stating, “As much as we always want to go boldly into the future, I think you can’t go into the future without understanding where you’ve come from, or what the past has taught you. And if there’s anything that it’s taught us, it’s that the hospital is a very interesting and exciting place for story to be told, and the lives and the stakes in the hospital are so much bigger. So adding something that’s new, but also having it honor someone who’s been there for a while, it feels complete.”

The April 1st episode promises to be a heartfelt celebration of “General Hospital’s” rich history and a touching tribute to the unforgettable character of Dr. Monica Quartermaine.
