The internet can sure be a very mean and dark place for a lot of people, regardless of who you are or what your status in life is. Friends Reunion director Ben Winston went on the record to slam all of the critics who have made rather “unkind” comments about Matthew Perry.

Many fans expressed their concern over the actor after seeing several teasers and interviews of Matthew slurring his words. Here’s what you need to know.

Even though a lot of people can’t help but wonder what might be going on with Matthew behind the scenes, Ben Winston says there’s nothing to worry about.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter about Matthew’s role on the reunion show, Ben said, “He was great. People can sometimes just be unkind. I wish they weren’t. I loved working with him. He’s a brilliantly funny man and I thought he had some great one-liners in the show. I felt just happy and lucky to be in his presence and directing him on something like this.”

Friends producer Kevin S. Bright also told The Hollywood Reporter in a separate interview that there shouldn’t be any concern about the actor, despite the fact that he once became addicted to Vicodin and had several rehab stints. In 2000, he was hospitalized with pancreatitis due to his alcohol abuse.

Bright said, “I talked to him. It was great. And what people say is what people say. I don’t have any to say about that, except it was great to see him. And I think he’s very funny on the show. But yes, I think he’s OK. He seems stronger and better since the last time I saw him, and excited about going forward.”

Matthew got sober in 2001 after admitting that he had a problem. He said, “I didn’t get sober because I felt like it. I got sober because I was worried I was going to die the next day. I went to work in extreme cases of hangovers. It’s so horrible to feel that way and have to work and be funny on top of that.”
