One crew member has died and another has been hospitalized after a freak accident 0n the set of Alec Baldwin’s western- Rust, currently being filmed on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set in New Mexico.
The 42 year old female crewmember- reportedly a director of photography- died from injuries sustained from a prop gun misfire. She was air lifted by helicopter to University of New Mexico where she succumbed to her injuries
Another male crewmember, also 42, is- at time of writing- in emergent care after being taken by ambulance to Christus St. Vincent’s hospital.
Freak Prop Gun Misfire On Set of Alec Baldwin Western Film ‘Rust’ Leaves Crew Member Dead
The movie’s production was immediately shut down and it is being reported that detectives from the Santa Fe County Sherriff’s Office are on the Rust set, investigating how the prop firearm was used and what type of projectile was discharged.
“This incident remains an active investigation,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement Thursday. “As more information becomes available, updates will be provided.”
Law enforcement as well as emergency medical services were called to the set early Thursday afternoon when a 911 call was received, stating that two individuals had been shot.
An early story to leak from the set stated that a lead cast member had cocked the prop gun during a rehearsal, unaware that there were live rounds in it. the bullets hit the two crew members: the man in the shoulder, the woman in the stomach.
The party line from a production spokesperson is that there was an “accident” on the New Mexico set of Rust involving the misfire of a prop gun with blanks. “Two crew members have been taken to the hospital and are receiving care,” the spokesperson had announced earlier this afternoon. “Production has been halted for the time being. The safety of our cast and crew remains our top priority.”
Bonanza Creek Ranch is known for Western-set productions and Rust, starring Alec Baldwin and Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles is just one of nine movies currently being filmed in New Mexico.
Both Ackles and Baldwin were announced as being unharmed in the incident.
