According to a report made public on Monday by the North Carolina state medical examiner’s office, former NFL wide receiver Charles Johnson committed suicide in July. Johnson shared a Super Bowl championship with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in 2001.
According to the ME documents that USA Today was able to get, Johnson appeared to have overdosed on drugs before he died. He had just turned 50. Johnson was initially discovered dead on July 17 in a Raleigh hotel room, one day after his wife had filed a missing person’s report. Until this week, when the medical examiner’s findings were made public, the cause of death remained unknown.

Despite having no active prescriptions, authorities claimed in the documents that Johnson had oxycodone, hydrocodone, and mirtazapine in his system at the time of his death. The outlet has previously reported that the former NFL wide receiver claimed he had infirmities as a result of his time playing.
After being selected in the first round of the 1994 draft, Johnson spent nine years in the NFL playing for the Steelers, Eagles, Patriots, and Bills. After his passing, the high school in North Carolina where he was employed released a statement saying that he would “be missed by so many, especially your Husky Family.”
