Chris Pronger, a former NHL player, gave his support for wounded Buffalo Bills defender Damar Hamlin while sharing his thoughts on a similar situation from his playing days.
In the first quarter of the Monday Night Football game between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, Hamlin passed out on the field. Before being transferred to a hospital, he received medical care for almost 20 minutes. He experienced a heart arrest after being struck in the chest by Bengals receiver Tee Higgins’ shoulder, the Bills reported early on Tuesday morning.
“Prayers that Damar Hamlin can have the same outcome that I was fortunate to have with my incident. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Damar, his family, teammates and the greater NFL community during this incredibly scary time.”

Chris Pronger Sends Love To NFL’s Damar Hamlin, Suffered Same Injury In NHL
Cardiologists believe it’s too soon to determine what stopped Hamlin’s heart, although commotio cordis is one of the potential causes. When a person suffers a severe chest blow, it is known as commotio cordis, which results in a rapid cardiac arrest.
According to Dr. Rod Passman, director of the center for arrhythmia research at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, the condition only occurs under extremely unusual conditions, such as when a direct blow to the heart occurs “at the exact wrong location at the exact wrong timing” during the heart’s rhythm cycle. Four days after the event, Pronger resumed his game.
“My eyes roll back in my head and then I went down. At the time, you’re young and you don’t take it seriously. But as time goes on, you read about these types of incidents and that kids die from it. I was lucky.” Pronger said in an interview back in 2015.
