It’s not official yet, but many fans agree: Ellen DeGeneres is a canceled celebrity. In other words, it doesn’t look like many viewers will tune in to watch the disgraced talk show host when her show returns next month.
Many fans are saying good riddance to both the television personality and her daytime television talk show after allegations were made that the Ellen DeGeneres Talk Show workplace is a toxic environment and that the host herself is anything but ‘nice’ behind the scenes. Here’s what you need to know.
Ellen DeGeneres’ Ratings Won’t Be The Same When Talk Show Returns
Of course, it didn’t take very long for many of Ellen’s fans and critics to comment on the situation. Many have even been scouring old moments from her show on YouTube, in which they don’t find any of her ‘practical jokes’ funny anymore and the way she seemed to press celebrities to talk about subjects that they didn’t feel comfortable talking about on camera.
One particular moment was when Ellen apparently forced Mariah Carey to drink champagne to prove that she wasn’t pregnant with her twins back in 2010. Mariah clearly didn’t take a sip of her champagne, signaling that she was indeed expecting at the time. For many fans, they now feel outraged that Ellen would be bold enough to pull such a stunt in front of a live studio audience.
Many comments from social media users have included, “I don’t know if the audience was told to laugh on cue, but I am not finding this funny at all. Mariah clearly didn’t feel comfortable talking about her pregnancy or even announcing it when she wasn’t ready,” along with, “Ellen out of all people should know just how dangerous it is to out someone like this, and on national television no less.
What was she thinking? I’m surprised it’s taken this long for people to realize just how mean-spirited she is.”
Ellen, meanwhile, has not made any comments about the allegations in public, nor has she said anything about her future on the show, but she did send out a memo to her staff saying that changes will be made to the way things are operated behind the scenes.
She wrote, “Hey everybody – it’s Ellen. On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness – no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry. Anyone who knows me knows it’s the opposite of what I believe and what I hoped for our show.”
