In a case of very poor timing, British pop star, Ed Sheeran has announced he has tested positive for Covid-19. He announced the news on Sunday, mere days from the October 29 release of his 5th studio album- “=” (Equals).
“Quick note to tell you that I’ve sadly tested positive for Covid, so I’m now self-isolating and following government guidelines,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram. “It means that I’m now unable to plough ahead with any in person commitments for now, so I’ll be doing as many of my planned interviews/performances I can from my house. Apologies to anyone I’ve let down.”
Ed Sheeran Tests Positive for Covid Only Days Before Album Release and Scheduled SNL Appearance.
He must be feeling fine if he plans to keep up with his commitments virtually, for which his fans are truly thankful. However, this does not help Saturday Night Live producers who are currently scrambling to find a replacement musical guest for the upcoming November 6th episode with Succession actor Kieran Culkin hosting.
It has been reported that the hunt is on for another performer who “appeals to the same demo” as Sheeran. Potential stand-ins include Justin Bieber or Shawn Mendes. There is the possibility Sheeran could “remote in”, but that is if his health is still up to it by next Saturday. It’s also a worst case scenario for SNL who much prefer a live performance.
The Mountain Goats , aka John Darnielle didn’t waste time, tweeting out to Lorne Michaels, creator and executive producer of SNL, that he was available as a Sheeran stand in

The Mountain Goats’ “No Children” has become a viral lip-sync anthem on TikTok, so, that’s a demographic match right there.
We’re sure many Indie performers will jump on the available train for Lorne and his team in the coming days!
This would have been the third time Sheeran had acted as musical guest on the comedy sketch show. He performed Sing and Don’t in a 2014 appearance and returned to perform Shape of You and Castle on the Hill in 2017.
Get well soon. Ed
