Remember that odd fever dream we all had back in 2017 in which Ed Sheeran played a member of the Lannister guard named “Eddie’ and even sang a song during the opening scenes of one of the episodes?

Where he literally sat by Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) and some of he fandom smiled because we thought it was cute, even if a little out of place among the rest of the normally bitter and gory scenes involving Arya’s character? Well now we know the reason why he got involved in the first place.

Why did Ed Sheeran guest star on Game of Thrones again?

Apparently Williams was a huge fan of the singer and played a huge role in getting him casted. Creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff (D&D), had actually been working behind the scenes for years to get Ed on the show, but it only worked out in 2017. Unfortunately, the little tidbit part was not well received by some of the fandom and had a good portion of fans snarking at him and harassing him over twitter, so much so that the singer ended up deleting his twitter account in the backlash of it all.

But this wasn’t the first time that Game of Thrones had hired musicians to play bit-part roles. the HBO mega hit show literally had cameos from Coldplay, Bastille, and Mastodon, but somehow only Sheeran got any backlash from his appearance.

While the appearance was definitely something out of the ordinary for the series, I think we can all look back at it now and give it a fan-service-y chuckle. This scene was the one time in which Game of Thrones just decided to heck with it and have a light-hearted scene for a teenage girl character who had literally been through the ringer.

If anyone needed a good, uplifting song in that moment, it was Arya Stark, she had been forced to watch her all of her family slowly die or be separated from her in some traumatic way, so to have her enjoying a good song around a campfire with some boys her own age for a change… it was a nice break. As for Sheeran, his verified twitter can be found but his bio says that he doesn’t use it anymore, considering the blue hellscape that is twitter and all of it’s karens, who can blame him? Stay tuned!!!
