Many people wonder what people mean when they mention that Taylor Swift has “easter eggs” in her songs and why she keeps revisiting her old catalog.

Taylor Swift just re-released 1989, much to the delight of her loyal and devoted fanbase. The question is, why is she re-releasing songs? Let’s start here.

Taylor Swift Wanted Ownership of Her Music

In 2019, Taylor’s music label, Big Machine Records, was sold to a man with a ruthless reputation. Scooter Braun, best known for discovering Justin Bieber, took ownership of Taylor’s music.

Suddenly, the first six albums Swift put her blood, sweat, and tears into were no longer “hers.” Taylor, who cares deeply about the songs she creates, wanted to own her work.

Scooter had taken away her option to buy. About a month or two later, Swift decided to re-record all six of her albums so she could procure ownership of her past work.

Recently, Taylor announced she would re-record 1989, and the world went nuts. It is a big-time fan favorite, and Taylor has even said that 1989 is her favorite record she made. It contains some of the best pop songs ever made.

In celebration of this masterful album, Taylor has been leaving what “Swifties” call “Easter eggs” through her outfits, music video imagery, and lyrics.

Since Taylor’s impressive career began, she has left fun little secret messages that only her fans can understand. It’s like, well, an easter egg hunt. You need to be able to figure out what message Taylor is sending.

    The Color Blue Signifies 1989

To foreshadow the re-release of 1989, Taylor wore several blue outfits during her Eras tour. It was an all-blue occasion. These fabulous blue outfits perfectly matched 1989’s original color scheme.

In September, Taylor wore the same tall brown boots she wore several times in 2014 and 2015. At the premiere of her Eras concert tour movie, she wore a gorgeous powdery blue floral Oscar de la Renta gown and matching blue eyeshadow,

Taylor also made it look like she had her hair cut into a bob, which was the hairstyle she had back when 1989 was first released.

For the re-release of 1989, in addition to the original 19 tracks, Taylor added five new songs from the vault that didn’t make the album when it first came out.

Some of the Easter eggs in the songs are about break-ups from some of her high-profile relationships, like the one she had with Harry Styles.

An example of an Easter egg in 1989 comes from songs that feature water. She sings,

“Waves crash on the shore, I dash to the door.” And “Clear blue water, high tide came and brought you in.”

Water is a recurring theme in this album, and we all know that universally, water is seen as being the color blue.

Taylor’s romantic relationships with other celebrities seem to be constantly “drowning” in metaphor. Water is an excellent example of that.

Taylor explains her affection for dropping clever and thoroughly creative hints to her fans:

“I love that they like the cryptic, hint-dropping. Because as long as they like it, I’ll keep doing it. It’s fun. It feels mischievous and playful.”
