We’ve got bad news for Eastenders fans. Actress Melanie Clark Pullen died at the age of 46 after a lengthy battle with cancer. She made her debut on the show in 1997 while the soap was shot entirely on location in Ireland, and became a regular for the next two years. Here’s what you need to know.
The Irish star played Pauline Fowler’s great-niece Mary Flaherty on the long-running BBC soap from 1997 to 1999. Melanie also went on to feature in Catherine Cookson’s A Dinner Full of Herbs on ITV and in the film Ordinary Love, which starred Liam Neeson and Lesley Manville.

Tributes to the actor, who also ran a coaching company called Strut and Bellow, have poured in on social media following the news of her death.
“We’re deeply saddened to hear that Melanie Clark Pullen has passed away,” wrote the BBC’s official EastEnders account. “Our love and thoughts are with Melanie’s family and friends.”
Clark Pullen was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2019 but announced a year later that she was “cancer free” and in recovery. However, in June 2021, she told fans that she had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. She died on 29 March, having undergone radiotherapy treatment.
Melanie told The Irish News at the time: “I got the all-clear. I’m cancer-free, which is great, so now it’s all about recovery.” She is survived by her three children and husband Simon.
