Disney+ ‘The Mulan Remake’ has become a bit of a PR issue for Disney. And we’re not talking about how it’s yet another in a long list of live-action remakes of their animated feature films. Let’s break down how important Mulan apparently was to Disney and why people have had an issue with it.

Disney+ ‘The Mulan Remake’: Bad ties

So, let’s start with the most recent strike against The Mulan remake. It was filmed in Xinjiang, where it’s reported Muslims are being help in concentration camps. According to many reports, they expressed thanks for being allowed to film there in the credits.

This is not sitting well with a lot of people. In fact, in one of the few bipartisan political move in this country in at least a decade or more, both sides are actually demanding some answers over this decision.

It should be interesting to see what comes of this investigation over the coming days and weeks. All we can say is, there are calls for a boycott of the movie over their use of Xinjiang.

Disney+ ‘The Mulan Remake’: VoD nightmare

Another problem with the movie has been the VoD factor. The film was released to Disney+ in the wake of Coronoa Virus theater shutdowns. It seems viewers aren’t willing to pay the price tag.

Other blogs and sources have cited bad download numbers. It doesn’t help that there is apparently a Chinese-produced version available online, either. And that one is free. In a time when a lot of people are having trouble paying the bills due to lockdown, the choice seems obvious between the two.

When we read more and watched more videos about that decision, we were not surprised to learn accounts like Clownfish TV revealed the lackluster theater projections basically sealed the Disney+ decision.

Honestly, we think it was a no-brainer that it would be a bit lackluster overall, audience-wise. Fans haven’t been shy over recent years complaining about the practice of doing mostly remakes.

Disney+ ‘The Mulan Remake’: The reaction

So, what about the movie itself? The online reviews aren’t favorable. Lauren Chen did a review on her podcast where she pointed out the ways the new version weakened the story and showed the bad side of “woke” film making.

One example that stood out was when she talked about Mulan just willingly revealing her identity. Something that we agree makes no sense.

Other videos on YouTube are just as unfavorable. We particular love the title, “I watched Mulan so you don’t have to.” We’d suggest at this point checking out some of these videos, whatever movie you’re thinking of spending money on. These days, you just never know what you’re going to get.

Disney+ ‘The Mulan Remake’: The importance

To wrap things up, The Mulan remake controvsersies are particularly inconvenient to Disney. Thanks to the closures and the Star Wars franchise going down, Disney’s in a bit of a financial mess. Clownfish TV reported they’re not expected to recover financially to pre-pandemic levels until around 2025.

That’s a long wait, and they spend a lot on this movie. They needed this to do well. And to top it off, China is not allowing their journalists to talk about it. Not good, either, considering they were banking a lot on that market. We’ll see how things all work out.
