Disney+ is definitely not having the best year. Not only have their theme parks but forced to shut down because of the global pandemic that has been the coronavirus, but now there are new calls to boycott Mulan over concerns that the film was shot at China’s Xinjiang Province amid human rights issues. Here’s what you need to know.
According to new reports, Disney+ fans and critics are none too pleased over the fact that Mulan was filmed in a region that is said to be placing Uighur Muslims in detention camps. The predominantly Muslim, Turkic-speaking ethnic minority have lived for years under increasingly expansive surveillance and repression in the region. Protesters are also asking people to boycott purchasing Mulan on Disney Plus or going to theaters to see the film.
Disney+’s Mulan Spurs Controversy For Filming In China Amid Human Rights Issues
For years, China has been under international scrutiny for its treatment of Muslim minorities in Xinjiang.
The Chinese government has labeled “Islam a contagious ‘ideological illness,” leading the government to quarantine more than one million Uighurs in reeducation camps, according to New York Magazine. Mulan‘s credit sequence also extends a thank you to the “publicity department of CPC Xinjiang Uighur Autonomy Region Committee,” the Chinese Communist Party agency responsible for producing and managing state propaganda efforts in the region.
If that weren’t enough, the film has also been facing calls for a boycott by supporters of the Hong Kong antigovernment protests. This came after the movie’s star, Liu Yifei, said she backed the city’s police, who have been criticized for their use of force against pro-democracy demonstrators.
So far Disney+ has not made any comments about the controversy or the calls for boycott, either. In the meantime, drop us a line with your thoughts in our comments section below.
