Lately in conservative media we’re hearing a lot about Mr. Potato Head being non-binary (which is seriously a non-issue because they are a potato for crying out loud) and “cancel culture” and basically the conservative party has kind of turned into a laughing stock because they keep focusing on issues that are non-issues instead of say, rooting out the problem that plagues their party, which is conspiracy theories, racism, and classism, in no particular order.
But recently, senators Jim Jordan and Senator Matt Gaetz have brought before their colleagues something kind of interesting.
Republican Senators sign onto the #FreeBritney movement?
It appears that they want to do some looking into what they term “unlawful conservatorships”, and this appears to be Britney Spears. Okay, at first glance this looks like a step in the right direction for all involved, if done right this could potentially raise mental health awareness and awareness for abuse victims and victims of narcissistic abuse everywhere because unlike some would have us believe, mental health counts too, emotional health counts, and sometimes abuse is not categorized by bruises on one’s body, but what it has done to one’s way of thinking.
If this is done right.
However, this begs the question, would Senator Jordan or Senator Gaetz be all up in arms if Britney were a person of color, or if she weren’t worth over $300 million dollars, if she were their neighbor, or maybe even one of their unfortunate constituents who happened to be in a jail cell somewhere being mentally and emotionally abused by a guard?
Would they adopt the same kind of savior mentality, or would they look the other way and try to justify this abuse as ‘character building’ or by blaming the victim, ‘they made their own choices’?
What their party needs right now, is someone well-known enough and vulnerable enough so that they can ride in and be the champions, and you know, maybe if Britney’s grateful enough she could line their pockets with campaign donations and speak highly of them.
Everyone loves Britney, she’s not toxic and hateful like a certain other former reality TV show host that now resides in Florida who shall remain nameless. She’s not racist, she’s pro-LGBT, she’s the all-American girl! Freeing Britney would certainly redeem their party in everyone’s eyes, right?
Since when did #FreeBritney become synonymous with the emancipation proclamation?
The thing is, it isn’t. Don’t fall for the trojan horse. This is an attempt to forge a kinder, gentler image. The image that they should have thought about before January 6th, when that party lost the trust of the American people. This is just about appearances.
They have not denounced the insurrection, they have not denounced q-anon or any of the other conspiracy theorist groups associated with them, they have not denounced the racist groups who proudly proclaim to be on their side, and you know what, they won’t. You know why? It means votes.
This is no different.
So don’t be fooled, they’re not doing anything but attempting a rebrand. The same problems run rampant underneath. They’ve not done a deep clean, they’ve not ‘drained the swamp’, they haven’t taken a good, long, hard look at themselves because they simply don’t care.
Sure, go ahead, #FreeBritney, unleash the beast, and when she votes blue and all of her LGBT, POC, and female fans vote with her, then maybe they’ll have time to realize that this wasn’t the issue that they should have been focusing on and they should have been hard at work trying, from the ground up, to fix their image.
