The Monday, May 18 episode of Days of Our Lives may not have officially ended Alex and Stephanie’s relationship, but the warning signs are suddenly impossible to miss.
For months, the show positioned them as one of Salem’s more stable couples. Even after Joy returned pregnant with Alex’s baby, Stephanie kept trying to convince herself they could work through it. But Monday’s episode felt like a major turning point. Stephanie is finally realizing how much her future changed overnight, and she no longer seems sure she can handle it.
This situation is no longer simply about Alex becoming a father. It is about Stephanie questioning whether she still fits into the life he is building.
Stephanie Finally Admitted What Has Been Bothering Her

The biggest moment came when Stephanie finally told Alex the truth — she is not ready to be a stepmother.
That conversation had clearly been building for weeks.
Stephanie has tried to remain patient and supportive while Alex adjusted to fatherhood, but Monday’s scenes showed how overwhelmed she truly feels. She carefully explained that she would never ask Alex to choose between her and Kelsey, but she also admitted that this was not the life she imagined for herself.
Stephanie suddenly finds herself expected to step into a family dynamic she never planned for, and it is becoming clear she is struggling to process how quickly everything changed.
Trust Is Becoming a Bigger Problem
The issue also goes beyond Kelsey.
Stephanie revealed that she is beginning to question Alex’s honesty after learning he encouraged Joy to stay in Salem despite previously making it sound like the decision was entirely Joy’s. Even if Alex did not mean to hide anything, Stephanie clearly feels like important emotional conversations are happening around her instead of with her.
From Stephanie’s perspective, Alex keeps making choices tied to Joy and Kelsey without fully considering how those choices affect her. Every new complication seems to pull him deeper into that world while leaving Stephanie standing on the outside trying to adjust.
Alex and Stephanie Are No Longer on the Same Page
One of the most revealing parts of the episode was how differently Alex and Stephanie approached the conversation.
Stephanie was trying to express fear and uncertainty. Alex immediately jumped to asking whether she expected him to choose between her and his daughter. His focus was entirely on protecting Kelsey and adapting to fatherhood.
Meanwhile, Stephanie was searching for reassurance that there is still room for her in his life.
Instead, the conversation only made the emotional distance between them feel larger.

At the same time, Alex already seems deeply invested in his new life as a father. His scenes with Joy and Kelsey at the park felt natural and emotionally grounded. He talked about legal paperwork, family names, and introducing Stephanie to Kelsey like he is already fully embracing this next chapter.
Stephanie, meanwhile, still seems uncertain whether she can even handle being part of it.
Brady Picked Up on Stephanie’s Doubts Immediately

Stephanie’s later scenes with Brady only reinforced how conflicted she feels.
When she opened up about everything happening with Alex and Kelsey, Brady tried reassuring her by saying children have a way of working themselves into your heart. Stephanie admitted she loves Alex and hopes she can eventually love his daughter too.
But she did not sound confident.
She sounded like someone trying very hard to convince herself that she can adapt to a life she never expected to have.
That hesitation matters because soap relationships rarely survive when one person starts questioning whether they truly belong in the future being planned around them.
The Writing Is Starting to Point in One Direction
Could Alex and Stephanie survive this? Of course. Salem couples have recovered from far worse.
But the tone of the writing feels very different now.
Stephanie no longer sounds secure about their future. Alex keeps unintentionally making her feel pushed aside. Joy is becoming a larger emotional presence in his life again. And every conversation about Kelsey seems to create more distance between Alex and Stephanie instead of bringing them closer together.
At this point, the show seems to be laying the groundwork for a breakup that may already be starting emotionally — even if neither of them is fully ready to admit it yet.
