‘Days of Our Lives’ (DOOL) spoilers reveal that Deidre Hall recently spoke with Soap Opera Digest and disclosed Marlena Evan’s hopes as she and Steve Johnson (Stephen Nichols) search for John Black (Drake Hogestyn).
‘Days Of Our Lives’ Spoilers: John’s Handler Lost Track Of Him In Estonia
The plot is the start of the emotional exit story for John as the actor, Drake Hogestyn, passed away in September 2024 from pancreatic cancer.
Marlena and Steve’s search really kicked off last week as the pair went to Shane Donovan (Charles Shaughnessy) and demanded answers.

Shane, of course, wasn’t exactly forthcoming, but he did tell them, “This much I can share with you: John’s handler lost track of him in Estonia.
The logical explanation is that John may have been abducted. It’s also possible that he offered himself as a hostage in place of someone else so that they could go free. That’s the kind of person that he is.
As Marlena is starting to worry about John, Hall knows that her character understands the nature of John’s work and knows the risks involved.
When Marlena admitted to Brady Black (Eric Martsolf) and Belle Black (Martha Madison) that John was missing, she was still “filled with hope.”
As the matriarch of the family, Marlena feels a sense of duty to be strong for her children. Hall told Soap Opera Digest that filming these scenes with Martha Madison and Eric Martsolf was emotionally challenging.

These scenes were recorded when Drake was “alive, but very sick.” Hall shared that Ken Corday had spoken to Drake, and the door was open for him to return.
‘Days Of Our Lives’ Spoilers: Drake Hogestyn Approved Of His Character, John’s Demise Before He Passed Away
“Drake loved working. He loved being there. Drake loved everyone from the night crew to the people who worked in the commissary,”
Hall said.
“He loved everyone. Our greatest wish was that he would rally enough to come back,”
She admitted.
“I’m sure that you could tell when he was still on air that he was getting thinner. The wardrobe department was doing a lot to try to ameliorate that. It was a tough one.”
She added,
“We wanted him there so much, and he wanted to be there so much, so we were all pulling in the same direction to hopefully make that happen.”
Hogestyn signed off on his character, John’s death, before he passed. He was told how it would all go down, and he approved. The actor trusted the writer’s vision for how to honor his iconic character.

The writers had the tough job of figuring out how this would all turn out. They had to determine the outcome.
They allowed for the possibility of John’s return if Drake wanted to remain involved and how to write the story if John didn’t survive.
The outcome of this trip won’t be what Marlena had hoped, as this was John’s final mission. Sadly, this time, he’s not coming back home to his family. It will be devastating for John’s loved ones.
Marlena will have to deliver the tragic news to her children. However, Days promises a powerful and dramatic send-off and a moving funeral for the show’s constant and eternal hero, John Black.
