‘Days of Our Lives’ iconic star Drake Hogestyn, who played John Black, passed away on September 28, 2024, at 70, just one day before his 71st birthday.
‘Days Of Our Lives’ Hogestyn Was Diagnosed With Pancreatic Cancer
Soap Opera Digest reported the news yesterday. Hogestyn’s family shared this statement,
“It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn. He was thrown the curve ball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination. After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones,”
They said,
“He was the most amazing husband, father, papa, and actor. He loved performing for the Days’ audience and sharing the stage with the greatest cast, crew, and production team in the business. We love and will miss him all the Days of Our Lives.”
Executive Ken Corday said,
“This is very a difficult one for all of us. Hogey was the ultimate team player and there are no sufficient words to express how deeply he’ll be missed. His impact on our show, personally and professionally, was profound and will forever remain unmatched.”
Hogetyn debuted on Days Of Our Lives in 1986 in a landmark storyline. He played a mystery man called “The Pawn.” His character was later revealed to be Marlena Evans’s (Dedrie Hall) thought to be dead husband, Roman Brady (Josh Taylor).
Hogestyn appeared in over 4,000 episodes of Days in 38 years. His on-screen son, Christopher Sean, who plays Paul Narita, wrote a lovely tribute:
“I will always love you. You were more than just my TV father; in my eyes, you were my dad. Thank you for everything you taught me and the love you gave me. The world lost a true hero. Miss and love you so much, Drake. Rest in Peace, Dad.”

Hogestyn was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, on September 29, 1953. His younger life was impressive. He attended North Side High School and the University of South Florida in Tampa.
Hogestyn was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees. He played third base with the Yankees until an injury took him out of the game. In 1977, he decided he wanted to try his hand at acting.
He became a popular leading man when he joined Days of Our Lives. Whether battling the likes of Stefano DiMera (Joesph Mascolo) or the devil himself (literally), John and Marlena always came out on top. Their love was beautiful and enduring, and fans responded to it. He became one of the most iconic leading men in daytime.

Allison Sweeny, who plays Samantha Brady on the show, said,
“Drake was an incredible man. He was funny, generous, and thoughtful. He cared about every scene, every person. He loved Days the fans and shared that passion with everyone on the set. My heart breaks for his family, and they meant everything to him. He was such a huge part of my life at Days. I will miss him terribly and treasure every story, every joke, and every hug.”
Kristen Alfonso, who plays Hope Brady on the show, shared a video tribute and wrote,
“I’ll always remember you as a loving, loving father, husband, and dear friend, but mostly, an incredible, passionate human being, generous, and immensely kind. Love you. Rest in Peace, my sweet friend.”
Kassie DePaiva, who played Eve Donovan on the soap, wrote on X,
“I’m so saddened by this news. What an amazing life he lived. He will be missed. He made the world a better place.”
Wally Kurth, who plays both Justin Kiriakis on Days and Ned Quartermaine on General Hospital, said,
“I’m trying to find the words to express my deep sadness on Drake’s passing. He was a special man. He was so passionate about life, his family, his storylines, and the stories he would tell! He had a lot of them. Drake loved his job and all his fans. And we loved him.”
Kate Mansi, who played Abigail Deveraux on Days and now plays Kristina Corinthos Davis on General Hospital, said,
“Heaven’s not ready for storytime, Drake. They don’t know how good they’re about to have it.”
Tamara Braun, who plays Ava Vitali on Days, had some kind words,
“What an honor it was to work with you, to get to know you, to hear your incredible stories. Your kindness and generosity of spirit were always exemplary. Your work ethic, your life ethic, family ethic. Oh how you loved your family so deeply. I loved to watch your face light up while speaking about your wife, kids, and grandkids. You beamed. My heart hurts the most for them. What a loss. I am so grateful that Days put you me, and Stephan Nichols together for a fun-filled caper story. The three of us laughed so much while we ran lines, while we shot, while we played. We just laughed, and laughed. What a treat. I will cherish that time and the memory of you.You, kind sir. Sure did love life and knew how to enjoy all its gifts. Boy, did I admire that in you. You are already greatly missed. Much love and respect always, Drake.”

No one can think of the history of Days without thinking of John and Marlena. They were such a beloved super couple; their story was memorable and poignant. Hogestyn’s legacy on Days is important and timeless. He will never be forgotten.
Hogestyn is survived by his wife, Victoria Post, his four children, Whitney, Rachel, Alexandria, Ben, and his seven grandchildren.
