After Dave Chappelle was attacked on stage and tackled by a man with a knife, many are wondering if Will Smith‘s slap on Chris Rock has set a precedent for hitting comedians if they say something you don’t like. After the Oscar slap there was a lot of discussion about whether or not this would happen more… Well… has it?

While it seemed like people were grasping at straws, it may very well be true.

Chappelle was on stage filming for a Netflix special when a man charged him and tackled him in front of everyone. Because of these attacks, comedy clubs have been upping their security all over the country.

Did Will Smith Set A Precedent For Hitting Comedians On Stage?

Of course, several comedians have come out in response to the attacks, calling for freedom of speech and to simply, not be attacked over jokes. And that’s the thing. These are jokes. Many want to attribute their jokes as  ‘views’ and ‘statements’, but they’re not, they’re literally jokes.

I suspect we will continue to see more of this as both the attackers escaped their actions with much recoil. Will Smith was kicked out of the academy but still won an award. While the man who attacked Chappelle had the felony charges dropped against him!

If we do not punish the act, they will continue to do it. I’m not thrilled to think to hitting comedians will be common place, and unfortunately, it looks like this could be come the norm.

Will comedy stores be able to beef up security enough to stop things like this happening?

What do you think? Did Will Smith set a precedent for hitting comedians? Let us know in the comments below.
