Dancing with the Stars Maksim Chmerkovskiy has spoken out for the first time since he arrived back to the United States after fleeing Ukraine.

The star had been stuck in the country when Russia decided to engage in their attack. During the course of this process, Maksim was understandably shaken by it all. Not only was he seeing his country being destroyed before his very own eyes, he also had his wife (Peta) and child waiting at home for him.

Although he managed to get out of the country in one piece, there was still an element of guilt, given that there were those who did not manage to do the same.

In an interview with Good Morning America, he said: “I cried on the way from the airport. I felt embarrassed the entire ride back because I was the only man on the train amongst all women and children. I feel guilty.”

Nevertheless, Maksim should not have anything to feel guilty about. He was ultimately stuck in the middle of a war and had to decide between whether he should stay to fight in the army, or leave to go back home. Regardless of which decision he made, people would have understood his actions either way.

And after realising that he could be more of a help outside of the country, Maksim knew that he had to leave. He added: “I felt like things got real, and all the sudden I don’t actually have all of the things needed to feel safe in this place at all.

“I’m not built for this at all. I’m just realizing that I’m not at the place where I should be.” Now that he is back home, Maksim has spent his time with those close to him. In the pictures here, we can see Maksim and his wife holding hands as they walk down the beach. They have, after all, been through a lot of late.

There are no words to describe what Maksim has been through, but the sad reality is that there are many others still being affected by the events in Ukraine. So there you have it folks.
