Eventually he was going to say something about it, right? Chris Rock has broken his silence after the academy revealed that Will Smith was asked to leave the Oscars but refused. This came after the King Richard actor slapped Rock across the face over a joke that he made about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her shaved head. Here’s what you need to know.
Taking to the stage for the first time since the incident which rocked Hollywood, Rock told the audience he was “still kind of processing what happened” – though he never mentioned Smith nor his wife by name. Wearing all white, he seemed to be almost embarrassed by the multiple ovations he received.
Chris Rock Finally Breaks His Silence After Getting Slapped By Will Smith At The Oscars
“Other than the weird thing, life is pretty good,” Rock said at one point midway through his first of two sets. As the applause carried on for minutes – with fans yelling “I love you, Chris” – the comedian appeared to be getting emotional, a guest seated near the stage reported.
“How was your weekend?” Rock joked before getting into his set.
Rock’s fans also chanted the colorful phrase during his first pair of shows there Wednesday. Despite ignoring them the day before, Rock took a different approach Thursday and immediately quieted the overzealous fan, People reported. “No, no, no, no, no…” Rock responded.
Rock is scheduled for two more shows at the Wilbur, before departing Friday for the rest of his highly anticipated Ego Death World Tour. Although Rock has yet to comment on the situation at length, he kicked off his tour this week by briefly acknowledging the widely discussed viral moment. “I’m still kind of processing what happened,” he told the sold-out crowd in Boston.
