The legal drama surrounding Britney Spears continues. After serving her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, a Cease-and-Desist letter, the younger Spears responded with a letter of her own. Now, their father, Jamie Spears, is the subject of the latest. Here’s what you need to know.
Britney Spears’ Lawyer Fights Back
First, Britney Spears’ representative, Matthew S. Rosengart, recently spoke to reporters after a day in court. One issue at hand is the fact Jamie Spears wants to continue to be paid.
Rosengart claims Spears says he, “committed no wrong-doing and his position is that as a result of ‘engaging in no wrong-doing’ he’s entitled to in addition to the monies he earned while serving as fiduciary to have his daughter to continue to pay him, so Mr. Spears’ issue is two-fold. One, as a matter of common sense, equity, and policy, given that he is an ignominiously suspended conservator, who has already been paid by the estate, why should he be paid anymore? Second, as a matter of law, whereas suspended conservator has been involved in potential or actual wrong-doing, he should not be entitled to any legal fees going forward from the estate that had previously been pillaged.”
Spying On Britney Spears?
Rosengart’s work is apparently not close to done yet. While speaking with reporters, he addressed the allegations that Britney Spears was spied on during the conservatorship. One report, in fact, alleged that devices were placed in the singer’s bedroom. This is apparently something that hasn’t been forgotten, as Rosengart said, “The eavesdropping issue is front and center as a matter of law.”
Given that statement, we believe this whole situation is a long way from being resolved. Expect a lot more coming in the future, as the allegations continue to come from all sides.
He also addressed claims from Spears’ lawyer that Rosengart or his firm planted a story in the New York Times in September. During the press briefing, he said, “I’d like to think I have that kind of power, but I actually don’t. It did not happen.”
When asked about her father’s request to unseal records, including medical records, Rosengart said, “I think that is an outrageous request.” He then went on to ask, “Is that what a father does?”
Britney Spears Brings Change?
The case has apparently had a huge impact, and not just among fans of the singer who wanted to see her liberated. Not only has this also drawn more attention to cases like Amanda Bynes’ conservatorship, as well as the one involving Nichelle Nichols, but it might change the law as well.
In the video, her lawyer spoke about legislation before the California Assembly that would make it harder to get people into a conservatorship, as well as easier for one in that situation to get out.
