Over 70 female MPs from across Britain’s political parties have denounced the media’s treatment of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex. They have signed an open letter expressing their support for Meghan in “taking a stand against the often distasteful and misleading nature of the stories printed in a number of our national newspapers concerning you, your character and your family”.
The MPs condemned the stories published by the newspapers, calling them out on “what can only be described as outdated, colonial undertones to some of these stories”, and promised to ensure that the tabloids respect Meghan’s right to privacy. The letter was printed on the House of Commons headed paper from Labour’s Holly Lynch’s office. It was posted on Lynch’s Twitter account and addressed to Meghan herself.

The Duchess has expressed her gratitude towards the MPs for their support. Lynch mentioned that she received a phone call from Buckingham Palace, and that the Duchess wanted to speak with her. Lynch explained that she was concerned about the relentless sexist and xenophobic content in the press coverage, and stated firmly that there was no place for it in this day and age.
The letter was written in the wake of the ITV documentary ‘Harry & Meghan: An African Journey’, where Meghan speaks out about the British tabloids. She mentions how before marrying Harry, her friends had warned her about how cruel the British press could be and how they would destroy her life. In the documentary, the Duchess speaks about how she had tried to maintain a “stiff upper lip”, but had been the centre of false stories.
Parts of the letter read: “On occasions, stories and headlines have represented an invasion of your privacy and have sought to cast aspersions about your character, without any good reasons as far as we can see.
“Even more concerning still, we are calling out what can only be described as outdated, colonial undertones to some of these stories. As women members of parliament from all backgrounds, we stand with you in saying it cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.”
During the Duke and Duchess’s tour of southern Africa, the couple released a statement where Prince Harry blamed the press for being the cause of a “ruthless” campaign against Meghan.
Talking to ITV’s Tom Bradby, Harry stated that he refused to entertain the media “into playing a game that killed my mum”, and was focused on protecting Meghan and their son, Archie.
