The legal war between Prince Harry and the major British tabloids heats up. The defendant has accused the Duke of Sussex of destroying evidence in his phone hacking case.
Harry Deleted Text Messages With His Ghostwriter
News Group Newspapers claimed that Harry deleted text messages from his phone from J.R. Moehringer, the ghostwriter of his tell-all memoir, “Spare.”
Judge Fancourt commented that it was disturbing that a large number of text messages between Harry and Moehringer had been erased.
The Judge ordered Harry to write a statement to make “Transparently clear” what occurred.
Harry and several other famous players are suing News Group Newspapers for alleged phone hacking and
“alleged widespread unlawful information gathering, including landline tapping, bugging cars, burglary, and illegally obtaining confidential information.”
In other words, Harry alleges that his life’s private details were collected unlawfully.
The ghostwriter explained that he and Harry were text messaging each other non-stop when the book was being written.
The case, which was launched in 2019, could be affected by this revelation. The Judge said,
“I have seen troubling evidence that a large number of potentially relevant documents and confidential messages between the Duke and the ghostwriter of Spare were destroyed sometime between 2021 and 2023, well after this claim was underway. The position is not transparent about what happened and needs to be made so by way of a witness statement from the claimant himself.”
Harry’s lawyer said that NGN is engaging in a “fishing expedition.” They are looking for information they should have asked for when they started to prepare their case.
Harry’s barrister admitted that the entire chat history was removed. However, he explained that the action was taken to protect Harry. The two of them discussed a lot of sensitive information about the royal family, which, if leaked, could be very damaging.
Is Harry A Victim Or Is He Just Seeking Sympathy And Compensation?
It is interesting. If Harry had been so concerned about his family’s privacy and “damaging information being leaked,” maybe he wouldn’t have written most of “Spare.”
It may be healing and cathartic to talk about his mother, Princess Diana, and her tragic death. However, there’s a fine line between writing to heal and writing to try to gain sympathy.
Harry crossed that line when he vilified Camilla and shared the details of an altercation between him and Prince William that turned physical. He threw his family under the bus without thinking or caring about the repercussions.
A trial is scheduled for January 2025 to determine whether NGN is guilty and how much they must pay Harry.
The Duke stands to gain a substantial sum of money from the steady stream of lawsuits he’s filed over the past few years against the British tabloids. He and his wife, Meghan Markle, have filed ten separate lawsuits.
Is this claim Harry’s desperate attempt to gain sympathy and generous compensation or was he wronged?
NGN stands firm on the notion that these deleted text messages could explain why Harry was convinced he was a victim. The Judge decided that attempts should be made to retrieve these messages.
