Prince Harry is considering further legal action against the UK’s Mirror Group Newspapers after his win in court in December.
The High Court Ruled in Harry’s Favor in December
In December, the High Court ruled in Harry’s favor. It declared that he was a victim of unlawful information gathering through phone hacking by journalists and private investigators working for the Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, and Sunday People tabloids.
Harry will consider further action if he does not receive the appropriate damages after his court victory. The Duke of Sussex sued the Newspaper Group over 148 articles that he claimed defamed his wife, Meghan Markle.
Judge Timothy Fancourt determined that 15 of the 33 articles submitted for examination in court were valid through unlawful information gathering.
Earlier today, the case returned to the High Court, and no agreement had been reached regarding the potential damages for the rest of the articles written about miscellaneous subjects like his relationship with his former girlfriend, Chelsy Davy, and his military career.
Prince Harry believes the information used to write these articles was gathered illegally. He is seeking damages for his apparent suffering.
It’s a case that the royal family did not believe would end well for Harry. The Duke’s decision to pursue this case further separated him from his father, King Charles, and his brother, Prince William.
Harry wants to see the newspapers change the way they operate. He claims this is not about getting a huge payout but about enacting positive change.
The Duke certainly felt vindicated in December. His response to the win was,
“I’ve been told that slaying dragons will get you burned. The mission continues.”
The Violin Played as Prince Harry Talked About the Tabloids Hounding Him
Harry tells his tale of woe in court about how the British press had been hunting him since childhood. He talked about his mother dying and the tabloids hounding him.
Prince Harry talked about the paparazzi stalking him. He covered all his bases, and the judge felt sorry enough for him to rule in his favor.
In his tell-all sob story, “Spare,” Harry wrote about being disillusioned with his father for not wanting to take on the media. He described the press as,
“The same shoddy bastards who’d portray him as a clown. His tormentors. His bullies, and who were now tormenting and bullying him and Meghan.”
As of now, Harry has only been through about a quarter of the case. The barrister said that continuation of the trial would take up to ten days. It is dependent upon how many witnesses need to be questioned.
“Although the Duke is certainly prepared to attempt to resolve the remainder of his claim through agreement, it is necessary to list….the trial of the remainder of his claim as soon as is practicable.”
Explained Harry’s legal team.
The hearing today focused on arguments about legal costs for the trial. Harry’s costs to go to trial will not be determined until the case is settled. His legal team requested almost 2 million pounds to cover legal fees for the case against the Mirror Newspaper Group.
Harry’s lawyer, David Sherborne, said the tabloid’s deceit is grounds for covering Harry’s costs. Fancourt will give his ruling at a later date.
