It looks like Britney Spears is getting one step closer to having her freedom back. That’s because Bessemer Trust has just resigned as the singer’s co-conservator, prompting a lot of people to wonder: is dad Jamie Spears next to let go? Here’s what you need to know.
The judge in Britney Spears’ case, Brenda Penny, granted and signed the request. The court will formally hear Bessemer Trust’s petition at the next hearing set for July 14. This came after the wealth management firm asked to withdraw from the arrangement after hearing Britney Spears’ comments during her testimony.
Bessemer Trust Resigns As Britney Spears’ Co-Conservator: Jamie Spears Losing His Grip?
During her court hearing last week, Britney made it clear that she wants her conservatorship to end immediately without any testing and does not want to attend therapy twice a week. She also wants to handpick her own attorney.
Bessemer Trust, which supervises more than $100 billion in assets, said in a court document filed on Thursday it wanted to resign “due to changed circumstances.” The company said in its recent court filings that Spears’ representatives had said the conservatorship was voluntary and the superstar consented to it.
The company has now acknowledged that Spears’ “claimed irreparable harm to her interests” in last week’s hearing. The firm added it “heard the conservatee and respects her wishes.”
Bessemer Trust also stated that they believed that the singer was in the conservatorship voluntarily and had consented them to be a co-conservator.
“As a result of [Britney’s] testimony at the June 23 hearing, however, [Bessemer Trust] has become aware that the Conservatee objects to the continuance of her conservatorship and desires to terminate the conservatorship,” the documents stated. “Petitioner has heard the Conservatee and respects her wishes.”
