TikTok Sued by Former Employee Candie Frazer Over Shocking Videos Depicting “Acts of Extreme and Graphic Violence”

Mental health and wellness are incredibly important in the work place and now TikTok is under fire for not being supportive of their staff’s mental health. There is one former content moderator for the social media empire that is now suing TikTok because they were not concerned with her mental health. She mentions in her law suit that TikTok does not have any mental health clauses or safeguards on their platform and she has told attorneys that she has had a huge trauma due to this.

The Law Suit

This new law suit was filed by Candie Frazier. She said that she would spend about 12 hours a day moderating the videos that were uploaded to TikTok from a company called Telus International. She said that she saw “thousands of acts of extreme and graphic violence.”

She mentioned that in these videos, she saw mass shootings, sexual assaults of children, genocide, gang murder, and animal mutilation. She said that everything that she saw was traumatizing to her and that TikTok acted as if it was nothing.

Frazier stated that she and her co-workers had to watch about three to ten videos at the same time and they had to load one every 25 seconds! They were only allowed to take a 15 minute break in the first four hours of their days and then two other 15 minute breaks throughout the rest of the day.

She said that these working conditions were horrible and with the content added in, she just couldn’t take it any longer. She also added that they “heavily punish any time taken away from watching graphic videos.”

Breaks aside, Frazier said that she has suffered from “severe psychological trauma including depression and symptoms associated with anxiety and PTSD.” She added that she has “trouble sleeping and when she does sleep, she has horrific nightmares. She often lays awake at night trying to go to sleep, replaying videos that she has seen in her mind. She has severe and debilitation panic attacks.”

TikTok is not the first social media platform to have a lawsuit like this filed against it. Facebook and YouTube have had similar suits filed all based on the working conditions involved in their offices. The working conditions involved at these offices have been in the news for years and this case seems to be just like one of the past law suits.

We hope that Frazier gets the help she needs with this law suit and that TikTok can begin to make labor changes.
