‘Real Housewives of Salt Lake City’ star Mary Cosby has apologised after her comments towards Jennifer Shah led to accusations of racism.

Mary, for her part, is no stranger when it comes to controversy. Just recently, Jennifer had accused her of taking advantage of members of her church, despite Mary’s self-professed regard for God.
And it all came to a head when several housewives were discussing whether or not Mary was in fact running a cult. This caused Mary to break down on the show, as some of the housewives made a comparison between Jennifer’s legal problems and her church dealings.
In response, that made Mary very emotional. At the time, she told fellow housewife Lisa Barlow the following: “It’s not fair to put me with someone so…like, when I think about Jen, I see a heartless…I see a thug.
“Like, you know, those Mexican people that make all those drugs. To put me with that?!” Mary’s comments generated a lot of backlash for the following reasons.
First of all, people interpreted this as a widespread generalisation and stereotypical view that all Mexican people are involved in drugs. The very fact that Jennifer does have a Mexican background did not help things in this regard.
Secondly, a certain subset of people felt that her comments were designed to take away criticism that she was getting over the way that she reacts with her churchgoers.
One person on Twitter wrote: “Mary’s derogatory comments on last night’s #RHOSLC are indefensible.”
While another stated: “My enjoyment was put on pause as soon as Mary compared Jen to a ‘thug, those Mexican people that make all those drugs…disappointing.”
As a result, Mary had no choice but to issue an apology to prevent things from escalating further. After all, there has been increasing pressure to have her cancelled.
In her reply, she remarked: “I used poor judgment in my choice of words. Please accept my apologies.” Hopefully, Mary can put this whole thing firmly behind her and think more carefully about what decides to say in public going forward.
