Beloved actor Owen Wilson has opened up to Esquire Magazine about a past suicide attempt and how he credits his family, especially older brother, Andrew with getting him through “that dark place.”
It’s a subject the 52-year-old Wedding Crashers star has very rarely spoken about in the 14 years since the—thankfully—failed attempt to take his own life, but now he has revealed all including how younger brother, actor Luke Wilson found Owen after his suicide attempt and called 911.

Owen was hospitalized and, after pulling out of the movie he was filming at the time, Tropic Thunder (he was replaced by Matthew McConaughey) his depression was treated.
However, it was thanks to older brother, Andrew, that Owen was able to “come out of that dark place”. Owen chronicled how Andrew stayed with his younger brother, woke with him each morning and wrote up small, manageable schedules to help Owen put one foot in front of the other.
“Life seemed at first manageable and then, at some point, a long time later, actually good,” Owen described.
Owen also credits the rest of his family and friends for supporting him daily “wrapping their love around me, sleeping by my side.”
14 years on, Owen professes to be in a much better place, describing life as a movie character.
“Sometimes it seems like Life is being played by Gene Hackman in Hoosiers, “Owen explained. “Tough but fair. He’s going to demand a lot, but if you play as a team and do your job, things work out. That’s a good feeling. Things make sense.”
He admits Life isn’t always that simple and ‘fair.’
“Sometimes Life seems to be played by Tom Hardy in The Revenant, some nightmarish guy trying to kill you, where even if you get the upper hand, he’s still going to be there at the end whispering, ‘This ain’t gonna bring your boy back’ or your dad back or any good times from your past back. Or whatever.”
The Cars actor does appreciate what he’s got. “I know everything’s kind of up and down, but when you get on one of these waves, you’ve gotta ride it as long as you can.”
