ABC ‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers indicate an old, controversial story is back in the minds of fans. Thanks to the special, The Story of Soaps, viewers saw the documentary explore the Luke Spencer (Anthony Geary) and Laura Spencer (Genie Francis) craze. Here’s what you need to know.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: The story
This storyline original played out when we were far too young to even begin to comprehend anything on TV. And there’s probably some fans who weren’t even born when the beginning of Luke and Laura happened in 1979. That’s why this documentary was a cool watch, and why we were glad to see the scene available online. It’s one thing to hear about it, it’s something other to see it for yourself. In the clip, Laura’s at a disco and unable to get in touch with Scott Baldwin (Kin Shriner). Luke arrives and a conversation soon turns bad when she tries to push him to talk. Eventually it turns into a creepy scene where he goes from dancing with her to pulling her to the ground against her objections.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Reaction
We’ve always thought it was beyond weird for a woman marry the man who raped her, or that such a story would become a major event, with fans tuning in by the droves to see them tie the knot. Apparently, we weren’t the only ones. In The Story of Soaps, Francis spoke about not justifying the story any longer. She said it shouldn’t have happened, and others expressed similar views during that segment.
For us, personally, we’re not sure what we’d be more disturbed by. Our original perception that he was some random guy that raped her, or that he was a known person to her and expressed love for her. Anyone claiming they love someone when they’ve raped them has a distorted mindset and probably needs some help to get perspective on their life. It felt obsessive on his part. We were glad to see that GH would eventually address this and have Laura confront him about the act. ‘General Hospital’ spoilers say it took twenty years, but we guess better late than never, right? Doing a little reading on the situation, we’re glad to see his children also struggled with what happened as well. We also found it interesting the whole original story resulted from desperation. According to the documentary, the show had two weeks to improve ratings, or it was done.
ABC ‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Impact?
We see a potential impact of this story, years after the original story on GH. This time, it was on another series, and one of a totally different type: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On that show, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Geller) eventually formed a bond with a vampire named Spike (James Marsters). Despite the fact he was a bad guy who only stopped killing because of a chip in his head, the writers kept him around beyond the plausible mark. After he attempted to do harm to the group via other means, they wouldn’t kill him.
Also, his obvious attempts to isolate Buffy from her friends in season 6 was classic abusive behavior, while he also displayed obsessive feelings for her. This included building a Buffy robot to have around since he couldn’t have the real deal. This obsession and isolation would eventually culminate in an attempted rape. And much like with Luke and Laura, Spike would shown as a possible reasonable choice for Buffy. Other media has examples of similar disturbing romances, and we think it should make us all take stock of things. Why do these stories ever get off the ground? And when they do, why do we accept them/make them so popular? Maybe taking a hard look at it on a personal level will help us understand ourselves more.
