Idris Elba says that while the film and television industry sure has a lot of work ahead of them, especially when it comes to making all of their wrongs into rights, he doesn’t believe that racist movies and television shows from the past should be censored. Instead, he think they should just come with a warning. Here’s what you need to know.

In a new interview with the Radio Times, the handsome Hollywood actor says that he has a better solution to handle the movies and television shows of the past that comes with racist content. Instead of pulling them from online streamers and on-demand services, he thinks they should just come with a warning.

“I’m very much a believer in freedom of speech. But the thing about freedom of speech is that it’s not suitable for everybody,” the 47-year-old actor said. “That’s why we have a rating system: We tell you that this particular content is rated U, PG, 15, 18, X…I don’t know anything about X, by the way.”

Elba also says that racism and sexism should be treated similar. His comments come after many online streaming giants such as HBO Max decided to pull classic movies like Gone With The Wind because some of the film’s racist overtones. However, Elba doesn’t believe that erasing the past is the way forward. Instead, he thinks we should learn from our stories from the past. “To mock the truth, you have to know the truth,” he explained. “But to censor racist themes within a show, to pull it — wait a second, I think viewers should know that people made shows like this. I don’t believe in censorship. I believe that we should be allowed to say what we want to say. Because, after all, we’re story-makers.”
