Kate Middleton and Prince William helped brew beer and served desserts at Borough Market today. However, the Princess of Wales let her husband sample the cider at Fabel Beerhall.
Kate Has Avoided Alcohol Since Her Cancer Diagnosis
Princess Catherine shared,
“I had to cut back on alcohol since my diagnosis. It’s something I have to be more conscious of now.”
The pub’s owner, Hannah Rhodes, offered Kate a soft drink instead. She turned to William and asked jokingly,
“But you like your cider, don’t you?”
William sampled beer and cider from the Rhodes brand Hiver, which uses honey from a beehive instead of sugar during fermentation.
Kate, an expert beekeeper herself, told Rhodes,
“If you take the honey off the hive in early summer, it tastes very different.”
She added,
“If you take the honey off when it’s wet, it is a natural fermentation process anyway.”
William joked,
“She knows a lot about bees. Be careful what you say, you might be corrected.”
William and Kate learned how to brew beer at Southwark Brewing Company, as the royal couple highlighted the importance of pubs during their visit to Bermondsey Beer Mile.
The area is a stretch of breweries under the railway arches in East London. They spoke with the pub’s owner, Peter Jackson, who showed them how it’s done.
Kate and William Engaged in a Brewing Contest with the Pub Owner
The Prince of Wales tipped hops into a brewing kettle and remarked,
“It smells like horse feed as you’re doing it. There’s a real mixture of smells.”
Kate and William engaged in a spirited competition with the brewery’s founder to see who could brew the best pint. The owner declared that their pints were better than his.
Kate stirred a large vat with a wooden stick while William poured in hops. William and Kate then went to work during their visit to Borough Market earlier in the day, serving crumble and chopping cheese.
They also made some coffee. The Princess greeted Kim Innes, the founder and creative director of Humble Crumble. Humble Crumble is the world’s first official crumble bakery. Kate told Innes that she had watched her on MasterChef the previous night.
Kate and William eagerly put on aprons and went into the market building to serve pots of crumble and custard. William was responsible for ladling the fruit and crumble.
Princess Catherine poured custard, piping pink marshmallow fluff, and sprinkling toppings. Gabriel Unger, the company’s chief executive, was impressed by their work and creativity.
The Prince and Princess Were Greeted by Crowds of Royal Fans
Kate and William also happily sampled cheese, and their first taste test was of Pitchfork Cheddar. Kate asked which cheese was the most popular. They were treated to a yummy lunch of cheese and chutney.
William and Kate were very pleased to hear about the success of the British cheese industry. The Borough Market is responsible for introducing Pitchfork Cheddar and Gorwydd Caerphilly to London.
The Prince and Princess also stopped by Change Please, a social enterprise that supports people experiencing homelessness through barista training and wraparound support.
William helped to fund Change Please through his Homewards program. Prince William told the staff he wanted to bring the coffee into the cafes in the royal palaces.
The Prince and Princess of Wales were greeted warmly by crowds of royal fans, thrilled to meet the future King and Queen. At the end of the day, Kate and William stopped at a Riverboat Station.
It’s interesting to note that as Kate and William are often seen out and about interacting with the public, they are well prepared for their future roles and serve as the relatable, personable faces of the royal family.
