‘General Hospital’ (GH) spoilers share that Cameron Mathison, who is known for playing the dastardly Drew Cain on GH, is a kindhearted, down-to-earth person in real life.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Mathison Reposted Footage of His Home Ablaze
He recently disclosed multiple family tragedies. On Good Morning America, he recently divulged the heartbreak and the crushing blow of losing everything his family treasured in the Los Angeles fires last year.
Mathison’s home in L.A. was destroyed in the raging fires after the divorce from his wife of 22 years, Vanessa Arelavo, losing his mother to cancer, being diagnosed with cancer himself, and his beloved dog, Red, passing away.
When he reflected on the Loss of his home, he told the Daily Mail,
“It’s a very unique death. You never expect (to lose) your children’s home.”
On Instagram, Mathison reposted the captioned footage of his family’s burnt-down home, which he originally posted last year, and said,
“Loss changed us. Love carried us. Sending so much love to all those affected.”
It had been the home where he raised his two kids, which he shares with his ex-wife. He has a son, Lucas, and a daughter, Leila.
Vanessa added in the comments section,
“I will forever be grieving this loss.”
Mathison has since moved forward and stayed positive.
Fortunately, Cameron and his family were able to rebuild, an ongoing project. He’s looking forward to the finished work.
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: Mathison and Vanessa Had Dreamed of Their Kids Rasing Families of Their Own in That Home
Mathison and his family have lost so much, but fortunately, Mathison was able to retrieve some of their precious family photos before he fled his burning home.
Cameron reflected,
“I’ll never forget walking up to what was left of my home, while the Eaton fire was still burning.”
Sadly, Cameron and Vanessa had been dreaming of their children raising their own families in that home.
Despite the devastating Loss, Mathison is trying to “pay it forward” by helping others who are in the same situation. It was a year of pain and Loss for Mathison, but also learning and growth.
The fire destroyed thousands of homes and claimed the lives of dozens of people. Some other Hollywood stars who lost their homes included Paris Hilton, John Goodman, Jeff Bridges, and Billy Crystal.
Mathison also acknowledged that the most important thing was the well-being and safety of his family. However, he shared that while he recognizes the blessing of surviving it, he also feels the Loss of so much.
He said,
“Every few minutes, we’re thinking about the things that were in there that were irreplaceable. The kids’ projects, the baby photos that were only on film, my childhood photos.”
‘General Hospital’ Spoilers: The Actor
Drew’s portrayer admitted,
“Of course, that’s just stuff, and at the same time, it is still very unsettling and so surreal. And again, I’m just thinking of the hundreds and hundreds of people who are going through the same thing.”
One year on from this tragedy, many celebrities have started the challenging task of rebuilding their homes.
These people have only taken the first steps in what will likely be a process that will require several years of work. So far, only two homes have been rebuilt.
Mathison also shared last year that a GH fan, who isn’t very fond of his on-screen GH persona, Drew Cain, threw fruit at him in the grocery store.
Not to mention the online backlash that affected him and his family because of his GH character, Cameron emphasized the importance of keeping him, the actor, and the character he plays separate.
Some fans can’t distinguish between fiction and reality. However, Mathison remains a strong supporter of those who also lost their homes and an inspiration to many.
We send our thoughts and prayers to those people affected by the fires, the families who have lost their homes, and their animals displaced.
