Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have announced their new Netflix project. It’s an adaptation of the romance novel “The Wedding Date” by author Jasmine Guillory.

Harry and Meghan’s Original Netflix Deal Cost $100 Million

The book was published in 2018 and became the first in a six-book series. The film will be adapted by screenwriter Tracy Oliver, who was also behind the 2017 movie, Girls Trip.

Harry and Meghan will be working on the Archewell Productions project. The story “The Wedding Date” follows a political strategist who agrees to accompany a stranger as his date to an ex’s wedding. Yawn.

The new project aligns with Harry and Meghan’s new first-look deal after a string of spectacular failures. The couple was offered a whopping $100 million Netflix deal in September 2020.

The Sussexes squandered every single opportunity to work hard and create something worthy of the astronomical cost of their contract.

Harry and Meghan failed to generate ratings, and critics have panned their documentaries. The only successful Netflix documentary they produced was “Harry and Meghan.”

They spent the entire time trashing the royal family and revealing private details about them. It was after their infamous “Megxit” that they stepped down as working royals and fled from the UK.

Meghan’s lifestyle and cooking show, “With Love, Meghan,” was also a colossal flop. The second season performed much worse than the first one.

It certainly didn’t crack the top ten in the US or globally. It landed at number 383 with 5.3 million views in the first half of 2025, a significant drop from its first season.

In August, Harry and Meghan announced that there was “active development” on other projects with the streaming platform, which “span a variety of content genres,” including a film adaptation of another romantic novel, “Meet Me at the Lake,” by author Carley Fortune.

Their Last Announcement About Adapting a Film Based on a Romance Novel, “Meet Me at the Lake,” Went Nowhere

The project has seemingly been forgotten, with no mention of it for over 2 years. It doesn’t look like there has been any movement on the film whatsoever.

They have yet to tap a director or cast for the film. There has been nothing in the works for it since the Duke and Duchess announced their plans to adapt “Meet Me at the Lake” back in August 2023.

It is reported that Netflix paid approximately $3 million for the rights to the book so the couple could produce it. So far, we’ve only heard crickets. The arrangement was part of the original deal Harry and Meghan had with the streaming giant.

A primary Hollywood source weighed in, “By this point, you would have thought they would have a director on board and a cast. So, what is the delay?”

They continued, “And when you make something for Netflix, it takes a long time for it actually to hit the streamer. There is so much to do in post-production to make sure it’s ready for every country.”

The project may never see the light of day. Harry and Meghan claim to have many ideas, but not much came out of their original Netflix deal. Why would their first look deal be any different? Truthfully, Netflix only really wanted “Harry and Meghan.”
