During President Trump’s historic state visit yesterday, Kate Middleton wore the Lover’s Knot tiara, which had previously been worn by Princess Diana, Queen Mary, and Queen Elizabeth II.
Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara Was Crafted In 1913
The Princess of Wales made quite an impression at the state banquet in Windsor Castle. She looked gorgeous and every bit the future Queen as she was on the arm of Prince William.
Most of the time, Princess Kate wears a tiara, opting for the Lover’s Knot tiara. The precious piece once belonged to Princess Diana.
Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot tiara was originally crafted in 1913 for Queen Mary.
Princess Mary of Teck was born in 1867
She became the wife and Queen consort of King George V in 1893. Mary officially became Queen in 1910.
The tiara is actually a copy of the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, which was owned by her grandmother, Princess Augusta of Hesse, the Duchess of Cambridge.
The original tiara was crafted in 1818 and was renowned for its unique design. It was presented as a wedding gift to Princess Augusta in 1843 by her mother.
Since the Queen couldn’t inherit the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, she requested a copy of the original be produced for her.
The tiara was commissioned by the House of Garrard and made of jewelry from Queen Mary’s personal collection. It is said that she sacrificed her own jewelry, the Ladies of England tiara, to create the new piece.
The Lover’s Knot contains two rows of dazzling pearls. Queen Mary notably wore the tiara in various portraits and on state occasions.
Over time, the Queen decided to remove the upper row of pear-shaped pearls from the tiara, which displayed the lovers’ knots more prominently, and now features a row of diamonds at the top.
Queen Elizabeth Inherited The Tiara In 1953 After Her Grandmother Passed Away
The sparkle from the diamonds gives the tiara an almost otherworldly appearance and symbolizes eternal love.
The tiara was passed on to Queen Mary’s daughter, Queen Elizabeth II, after her grandmother died in 1953. She wore it on several occasions, but the last time it was seen on her publicly was in 1967.
In 1981, the Queen chose to give the tiara to her daughter-in-law, Princess Diana, who famously wore it to the State Opening of Parliament. She also wore it for royal tours, state banquets, and numerous charity events.
The timeless tiara had only one fault: it was heavy and uncomfortable. Diana admitted that it sometimes gave her unbearable headaches to wear it.
Once Princess Diana returned the tiara to the Queen, it remained in a vault for decades until Kate Middelton wore it to the Diplomatic Reception.
Since then, it has become Princess Kate’s most beloved tiara. According to the Daily Mail, Kate currently has four different tiaras in rotation: “the Lover’s knot, the Lotus flower, the Strathmore Rose and Cartier Halo.”
Out of the fifteen times Kate has worn a tiara for a royal family event, she has chosen to wear the Lover’s Knot tiara a total of ten times.
Every time Princess Catharine wears the Lover’s Knot tiara, parallels are drawn between her and her late mother-in-law, Diana.
The tiara has always been a special part of the Royal Collection. Kate Middleton honors Princess Diana every time she wears it.
