Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s November 2017 engagement interview at Kensington Palace was initially well received by the public. BBC reporter Mishal Husain questioned the couple.
Meghan Said The Interview Was “Rehearsed”
The soon-to-be Sussexes opened up about their relationship. They discussed everything from what They thought Princess Diana would have thought about their engagement to Meghan’s ethnicity.
The row was sparked by Meghan’s comment on her and Harry’s docuseries, Harry & Meghan, when she referred to the interview as an
“orchestrated reality show.”
Husain was shocked and responded to the Duchess’s insulting claims. “It was, you know, rehearsed,” Meghan said.
“We did the thing out with the press, and then we went right inside, took the coat off, sat down, and did the interview. So it’s all in that same moment.”
“We weren’t allowed to tell our story because they didn’t want our story,”
Meghan asserted.
Husain recounted that the interview was full of authentic joy, and it was a day of celebration for the royal pair.
Husain said her goal was to make Prince Harry and Meghan Markle feel as comfortable as possible. BBC director general Lord Tony Hall clapped back, saying the allegations were “simply untrue.”
The BBC network and the journalists were understandably insulted. A significant clue that things with Meghan would not be a cakewalk was that she seemed much more confident than other women who married into the royal family.
Meghan Always Appeared Confident
Lady Diana Spencer was 19 when she first became engaged to Prince Charles. She was timid and unassuming during their engagement interview in February 1981.
ITN’s Alistair Burnet asked softball questions, but one of them famously left Diana traumatized. When he asked the couple if they were in love, Diana said yes, but Charles responded with, “Whatever love means.” Poor Diana looked like a deer in headlights during the whole interview.
ITN’s Tom Bradby interviewed Prince William and Kate Middleton at Kensington Palace in November 2010 when they announced their engagement. Kate appeared visibly nervous throughout the interview.
In contrast, the former Suits star seemed more confident than Prince Harry during the interview. Imagine that. An experienced actress knows how to put on a good show.
Prince Harry proposed to Meghan with a stunning ring that features a three-stone design, which represents the present, past, and future. The diamond in the center was ethically sourced from Botswana, where they first fell in love. The two outer diamonds were from his late mother, Princess Diana’s collection.
Meghan gushed about Harry’s proposal,
“It was just so sweet and natural and very romantic. He got on one knee. As a matter of fact, I could barely let him finish proposing. I was like, Can I say yes now?”
Prince Harry Was Oblivious As The Duchess Put On A Good Show
The public saw the connection Harry and Meghan had, and it was clear they were very much in love. But it wasn’t as simple as everyone would later discover.
Meghan lied about a few key pieces of information. Remember: she’s an actress. For example, Meghan told Husain that when a mutual friend arranged for the blind date, she didn’t know anything about Harry. She said the only question she had for this person was, “Is he nice?”
Later, it was revealed that Meghan had a significant interest in the royal family since childhood. She supposedly had a book about Princess Diana when she was younger and read it several times.
Another source said that she had Princess Diana and Prince Charles’s wedding on VCR tape and would watch it religiously.
As an adult, Meghan commented rudely about William and Kate’s wedding on her blog, “The Tig. The public eventually saw through Meghan’s façade, and let’s just say the honeymoon is over.
Harry and Meghan were wed on May 19, 2018, at St. George’s Chapel. They have two children, Archie and Lilibet, and the couple stepped down from their royal duties in January 2020, eventually moving to sunny Montecito, California, where they live with their children.
