Prince William shared his desire to end homelessness during a two-part ITV documentary. When asked whether he thought he was the right person to lead the project, he answered,
“I think everyone having a right to a safe and stable home benefits us all.”
William Wants to Use His Role To Combat Homelessness
“I come with no other agenda than desperately trying to help people who are in need,”
He remarked
“And I see that as part of my role. Why else would I be here if I’m not using this role properly to influence and help people where I can?”
He said.
“And I like a big challenge. I do like that, but I can’t do it on my own.”
The documentary examines the first year of his ambitious Homewards campaign to end homelessness. Its purpose is to help raise awareness and show that we can end homelessness by working together.
The future King inherited the Duchy of Cornwall estate, a secluded estate established by Edward III for his son and heir to give him income. Now, the current Prince of Wales, William, has inherited it.
The land consists of acres, franchises, profits, and properties. William announced his plans to build houses on the estate to combat homelessness.
On Wednesday night, William also gave a speech about homelessness at the Centrepoint Awards, an annual event that recognizes the achievements of young people who have overcome homelessness and made a positive life for themselves. The ceremony took place at the British Museum.
Centrepoint is a charity that provides housing and support for young people in the UK. It helped people without housing get off the streets.
At the event, William called for “systematic change.” To fight the epidemic, he aims to focus on “prevention rather than management.” He wants to help young people have “affordable options” and live independently.
Prince William Learned About The Plight Of Homelessness From His Mother
William admitted that he first learned about the plight of homelessness from his mother, Princess Diana. The Princess of Wales took William and his brother, Prince Harry, to homeless charities when they were both young boys to encourage them to support the cause and incentivize them to help enact meaningful change when they had more influence.
William’s visit to the homeless charity The Passage greatly affected him. He has often talked about how the experience opened his eyes to a world beyond the palace walls and the challenges the homeless face.
His plan also includes wrap-around support, assisting people with their health, psychological, and social needs after years of inadequate care and attention.
Homewards is a program from The Royal Foundation, the Prince and Princess of Wales’s charitable organization that develops initiatives based on their interests.
Royal Foundation chief executive Amanda Berry said of the documentary,
“We know that television has the power to change hearts and minds. Homelessness can seem hard to prevent, but by sharing the realities of people’s experiences and those coming together to support them, we can inspire action.”
William’s dedication and passion for his Homewards project are evident. He’s been a patron of The Passage charity since visiting one of its shelters when he was eleven.
