Samantha Markle sued her half-sister Meghan Markle for defamation. However, Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell ruled to dismiss the case, sparing the Duchess from a tedious trial.
The Judge Determined That Meghan Was Telling the Truth
Samantha brought the case in March 2022. Honeywell determined that Meghan’s statements in the March 2021 Oprah interview with her and her husband, Prince Harry, were “substantially true.”
The case was discharged without prejudice, which indicates that she won’t be permitted to refile it. The trial was supposed to occur in November in Florida.
The Judge claimed that the plaintiff did not supply adequate proof. She also stated that anything that the Duchess of Sussex said was not defamation.
Meghan Markle informed Oprah that she had matured as an only child, and her sister amended her surname to Markle when Meghan began dating Harry.
During the interview, she explained,
“I grew up as an only child, which everyone who grew up around me knows, and I wished I had siblings.”
The two half-sisters grew up apart from each other and have not spoken to each other since Meghan was in her early 20s.
Honeywell rules that the statements she made during the interview were either opinions or
“substantially true based on judicially noticed evidence,” or “not capable of being considered defamatory.”
The Judge also determined that Samantha had used one last name but subsequently changed it to Markle soon after Meghan and Harry were said to be involved and that this is the truth.
Due to the estrangement of the two women, Samantha was not invited to Meghan and Harry’s famous wedding in May 2018.
Samantha and Meghan share a father, Thomas Markle, and he also wasn’t present at her nuptials. Meghan had Charles walk her down the aisle instead of their father.
Samantha Has Been After Meghan Markle for a Payday
After Harry and Meghan’s wedding, Samantha provided numerous interviews to talk about her tumultuous relationship with Meghan, and she even wrote a book called “The Diary of Princess Pushy’s Sister: A Memoir, Part One.”
Samantha claimed that Meghan’s account of what went between them was
“demonstrably false and full of lies.”
However, no evidence supported that anything Meghan said was untrue. Samantha has been after Meghan for a payday. Her entire basis for filing this lawsuit was that Meghan lied about having grown up as an only child.
Samantha claimed that Meghan’s statements had a negative effect on the sale of her autobiography. She stated that she had mental and emotional trauma from not being able to find work. Samantha also claimed this was a result of Harry and Meghan’s interview.
Samantha said that the couple’s docuseries was also a source of strife for Samantha and that Meghan spread
“malicious, hurtful, and damaging lies.”
She thought the Duchess made her look like a “liar and fame seeker” and that some of Meghan’s fans perpetrated nasty campaigns against her.
Apparently, Samantha lived in fear for her life from Meghan’s supporters, whom she said sent her threatening and violent messages.
According to Samantha, she suffered from “humiliation, shame, and hatred on a worldwide scale.” Not coincidentally, Samantha has been discussing how Meghan has ruined her life since she and Harry announced their engagement in November 2017.
